It was a must have for me - but I enjoy vampire fiction, and Skyrim was the first TES game where I had my character stick with being a Vampire because it wasn't horrible. Since it was the first game where I really got into being a Vampire and then - moar Vampire!? :P

There's some decently sized new areas to explore, and new story driven stuff, so if you like playing a lot of Elder scrolls stuff, Dawnguard is big enough to count - although the main quest just doesn't make any sense to me. If the characters behaved in any kind of logical fashion then the MQ should have been over very quickly.

I've enjoyed DG a great deal and have played through it twice so far. I didn't have any trouble with the vampire attacks myself, though some seem to have bugs I didn't come across any. I'd recommend it for sure.

I agree the main quest didn't make any sense.

It was a decent DLC, although for me it had no replay value, but that's me personally.

The vampire attacks aren't bad so long as you experience no bugs relating to them and you start the questline at a lower level and not like 50, otherwise the vampire attacks will hit harder.

I loved DG. I've done the Dawnguard side and the Vampire side. Prefer vamping to the drearier Dawnguard faction. Both end up having you do radiant quests and both factions' main quests ended too soon, i.e., the stories could've developed further. However that's the Skyrim style with inadequate, abrupt ends to factions' main quests. Radiant quests are bugged. I've been sent to convert Haran to a vampire four times now. Similar for other radiant quests. It's annoying to be forced to resolve these problems with the console. IDK how Xbox users deal with these bugs.

the gate that lets you enter the castle is bugged sometimes too. Sometimes people can get around them with consoles sometimes it seems they cant. I dunno maybe the ones who can't arent doing it right.

But the xbox has been known to experience this, I dunno how you'd get around it on a console.
