Dawnguard Homes...

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 3:49 pm

Before I issue my biggest complaint of the dlc, let me first start off with this. For the most part, I liked dawn guard. They actually tried to make a two-sided story, and actually had a few fleshed-out characters (though there were a few "out of place" dialog moments with Serena and Harkon that made me cringe). Bravo Bethesda.

Sadly, the thing I was looking forward to the most, the new homes, was one of the most poorly executed elements of the dlc. Todd Howard said at E3 that we'd be able to "trick out" our new homes. To most, including myself, this meant buying upgrades, and making it better. I was smitten, having Battlehorn castle to live in/ display my trophies made my oblivion experience 100x better. I have felt this game lacking in that aspect, as none of the homes fit me, and I dislike living in cities anyway. I haven’t played the vampire side yet, so I cant say what it’s castle was like, but fort dawn guard was an absolute fail.

Only the area outside, and about 10% of the inside changes in the least bit (and they don’t change that much), and it all happens automatically. The rest remains dark and decrepit, and has all manor of [censored] strewn about, including, but not limited to plates, cobwebs, dingy furniture, barrels ,trash, ect. I was expecting these would change to something after I bought an upgrade, but there was never an option. Even the room that I assume becomes yours (you are never told), half of its dark as the soul cairn, and the stupid weapon rack is bugged and doesn’t work right. You cant even drop/display your stuff; because your room/ rest of the castle is all one cell, when you put any objects out, NPC's come running up to it, and take it, giving it to you, saying "you dropped this", or something like it. I don’t understand this. They've shown they can make good player homes in the past... Mind my language here, but this is kind of a [censored]-up, considering what we were told we would get.

Here's an example of upgrades in next dlc, if they put another castle home in(and god I hope they do). It should have expensive upgrades, and multiple cells.

(* indicates they are in separate cell,(like the personal quarters in Battlehorn from oblivion) so NPC's cant take your stuff)

"Dragonborn Castle" (must do dlc quest line to acquire).
Bed chambers (3000)*
Personal Armory(10,000)*
Personal Library/ Enchanting Table(15,000)*
Personal Alchemy Lab (10,000)*
Kitchen(5000)
Dining Hall(5000)
Servants( and their quarters)(20,000)
Guards (and their quarters/guard posts) (20000)
Smithy/ merchant quarters (comes w/ forge,smelter,workbench,grinder) (20,000)

I hope SOMETHING like this is put in later dlc, because fort DG was an ultra disappointment.

Yeah I wish maybe they would sneak in Battlehorn Castle, Frostcrag Spire, Deepscorn Hollow, and the [Pirates' Place?] equivalents into one of the next DLCs, since they sai they won't have small DLCs :/

Really disapointed about the Castle too. The vamps don't get much of one either, except we get no upgrades at all (save one the uncovers a doorway)

Yeah, they dont have to be stand alones, they could be like they were in Dawnguard, except they could... well... actualy be good. Like I said, the plug in homes of Oblivion were amazing, and even the houses in vanila were better than the castle, so we know they can do better than this...

Couldn't agree more with you. I think that Fort Dawnguard is BEAUTIFUL in design, both outside and inside, but DAAAMN it's such a wasted idea in terms of self home and stuff...

Yikes... Ouch... That svcks. I don't do that kind of stuff until I find out if that will happen. Looks like I won't be moving to the Dawnguard Fort. What can you expect, this is a " :tes: " game.

They probably won't do anything to change DG, besides bugs, hopefully in the next DLC they will learn from DG. Also is the rumor true Bethesda said all Skyrim DLC will be smaller than DG. If they are I won't buy them unless, they tie off a cliffhanger.

That is what I hate when people advertise things, they say it is super awesome. The sellers definition of awesome is a polar opposite of what customers think awesome is.

Fort Dawnguard was a disappointment, there is actually no way to upgrade Castle Volkihar, its already amazing looking..blood all over and tied down human cattle at the dinner tables aside..they add to the whole this place is full of refined Vampires feeling.

Though Valerica does start a garden in the courtyard if you choose to open the path to the courtyard..so thats technically a upgrade.

Oh and andrew you can summon gargoyles in VL form that stay with you even if you revert back to your normal form...so..yes?

To be fair, at E3, todd didnt say we could upgrade the forts, he said we could "trick them out". I personaly thought this ment upgrade, like all past homes in tes, even the city homes in regular skyrim. Guess I was wrong?

@andrew252, going back to you geting your things stolen, they only took my [censored] when I would try to drop it and place things out, I didnt know they'd go through your stuff. Are there any safe storage options in this place? I havnt realy tried, but if I get to the point where I want t live in a castle bad enough to move to that dump, itl be good to know.

I was disappointed as well since I thought the places could be upgraded, like how you buy upgrades for the DB Sanctuary.

I agree the castles were extremely disappointing in how they were implemented and I wish I could "Trick them out" in the same way I can a player's home. I would love to have a Battlehorn castle or one similar to that in Skyrim as the ones from Dawnguard hardly feel like player homes. I had an ebony dagger disappear from one of the cases in Lord Harkon's room.

Yeah I was a little let down as well. I loved the DLC, one of the best by Bethesda yet imo, but by the end of the questline I was expecting to be able to upgrade the private quarters of the castle in a similar way you upgrade your vanilla houses. Oh well. The only real thing you even get in the Dawnguard fort is the one lonely mannequin upstairs.

I agree, they feel more like abandoned places rather than something roomy/suitable to live in.

I feel they could have made FDG really good imo, it just didnt happen. Had they 1. cleaned all the cobbwebbs and other crap up, and made it look slightly presentable, and 2. Givin you your own cell for your quarters(or just not make npcs take your stuff...), it could have been really good. I cant say for vampire castle, as I havnt finished the ql yet, but I hear its pritty bad as well.
