DayZ, Arma 2 Thread [02]

This is a zombie apocalypse mod that has gained a lot of attention and praise lately. It's developed by one guy, the production values are quite trashy, the mechanics are janky, yet the concept and execution is so compelling it makes people easily look past these shortcomings.
You start off in a fairly large sandbox map with no goal other than to survive by scavenging for food and water while defending yourself from the undead, or other players who act hostile towards you. Much like Minecraft, the game becomes pretty much what you decide to make of it. There are several servers usually supporting up to 50 players each, and you can switch between them as you please, but once you die your character and all your stuff is gone forever and you have to start over from scratch.
The mod has become so popular that the servers are constantly filled to the breaking point, and there's already talk about making it a fully fledged standalone game. The mod has caused Steam sales of ArmA 2 to skyrocket into the top 10.

I recommend checking out the youtube Let's Play series Days Ahead to get a good feel of what the game is all about. It's really long, but so interesting to just sit and watch it almost becomes like a movie.

It would be awesome if we could get a BGSF server.

Edit
Everything is white looking. Is this just the map or a glitch? It looks very weird. That is if its up close, far away everything looks normal. It has to be a glitch.

that may be possible, for minecraft we have a dedicated server thats pretty BA. we have slots for other games as well. we've talked about doing TF2 or something but i would rather have Dayz

Thanks that worked great. I also found another way to fix it by editing a file, but will do that another time.

Well I have the day free tomorrow and I am going to set aside some time just to play this game. I am in eastern time (north america). Add me to steam gamgcc and maybe we can get a game going. I do have a mic, I just don't like to use it. If you feel its absolutely imperative I have one let me know. Most likely in the afternoon after starting at or after 1pm.

wow me and arrowslayer just had an epic standoff in elektro police station. killed two guys who were camping there, got some ammo (i had completely ran out or markov mags). killed 2 or 3 people who tried to ambush us. ended up attracting a massive zombie hoard and we fought off as many as we could from the stair well. My health dropped to 3000 so i ran a bait mission while arrow tried to get me some blood packs from the hospital but they broke his legs. so i ran off to a hill, they slowed down trying to climb the hill, which gave me enough time to throw a smoke grenade and loose them.

My vision was blurred and in black and white. Ran out to the fields inland from elektro picked up a zombie but shot him down with my shotgun, then i guess zombies must only be distracted by smoke bombs for a limited time because i then had 6 or 7 swarm up to my while i was crouched. Over all i killed some where around 21-23 zombies in that encounter and im not sure how many arrow took down.

The start is a bit annoying with lots of people talking and the filming guy freaking out with every zombie, but it really grabs you after a while. Especially once people start dying and getting lost, since they're relying on direct proximity based voice communication only.

Maybe skip the first 5 minutes.

It's great how this game generates such stories, while being completely unscripted and happening to only a small group of people. Similar stuff happens to everyone, but every story is unique in a way. I love reading about it.

Did they change the zombie noises now by the way, since the mod has become more popular? The ones they had in the series were taken from Left4Dead.

Yeah, they changed the noises in the last update to something more original (ie. not taken from another game)

The guy filming starts off whimpering at the first sight of zombies. In the latest video hes become a bit of a veteran and calmly deals with dozens of zombies. That progression is one of the great things about that particular Lets Play.
