Deacon is dead... Completely dead.

Many hours/saves ago I sent Deacon home after a companion swap... and that's the last I ever saw of him.

I've been following the Railroad path a bit since then, and really wondered why I never saw him again... Thought maybe I had accidentally sent him to another settlement, but he was nowhere to be found.

So I used the console command to move myself to him, and lo and behold there he was, on the ground, in what remained of his power armor, lifeless.

How did this happen? Aren't companions supposed to be essential, until you side against their factions?

Is there a way to resurrect him?

This is really gonna screw over my Railroad plans isn't it?

I think Deacon's console code is 00050976 so you can do the resurrect command. That should work.

Sounds like he's only mostly dead.

Ok, I tried that now. He turned into this though:

Been a while since he's peed I guess.

He seemed unable/unwilling to move, so he did not follow me. I sent him back to the Railroad. Maybe he will spawn back there after a while, normal ;)

How so?

After resurrecting him, try clicking on him in the console and using disable then enable. Disabling and re-enabling NPCs sometimes fixes glitches and the like.

If that doesn't work, take comfort in the fact that it was only Deacon. The Wasteland is a harsh place.

Remember that several npc do have different ID, base ID and ref. ID. Mix that up, may cause failure whatever your want to do. As example, setting someone essential, use base ID, move to someone use ref. ID

He did get himself back to Railroad's HQ, no worse for wear. Everything back on track, hopefully :)

Hit him with a full resurrect command a second time.
I have had to do this on other npcs to restore normal behavior to them.

Do not give Deacon power aromr.
He unequips it all every time he changes clothes.
