Deadric Quest - The Black Star

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 8:55 pm

Trying to decided to take the Black Star - which can trap humans, or the White/Azura star that doesn't. From the conversation with Nelacar, it would appear that the Black Star will NOT capture anything but humans.

I played it both ways, took Azura and completed another 15 mins but now wondering if the Black Star would be better to hold a soul.

BTW - You can NOT make the Azura a favorite thus you can't quickly hot key it and juice up your items. Bummer.

I don't think it really matters which one you pick, there are bandits everywhere for Black version and if you pick Azura's you can simply travel to nearest Giant camp for a refill.

I decided to bring it back to Nelacar. I then visited that dark elf woman who proceeded to call me a blasphemer. So I killed her and svcked her soul into Azura's star. Muahaha!

Just a quick question, but what does it take to convince Nelacar? I have speechcraft 88 and he won't believe me when I try get him to talk (even though it's the truth ...). Don't want to bribe/intimidate.

I didn't have any issues - believe I just used the persuade or intimidate. Don't worry about using intimidate - it's never caused me issues. (Yet!)

I don't think "there is a quest where you have the option to use speechcraft to convince someone into telling you something" qualifies as a spoiler.

@bikedad: thanks, but I don't want to do it that way. ;)

Go with the black star...even a bandit you can one shot will be of the highest level and you need something comparable to a giant ^ in order to get the highest level for azuras to my knowledge. Plus there are forsaken/bandits everywhere.

Black, No contest.

Honestly, as much as I love this, I am bothered by how completely unbalanced it is. Remember that extra credit's episode where they talked about the difference between choice and calculation? This is what they were talking about. It's far too unbalanced.

If this were a choice, both options would have benefits and disadvantages that were the same. As it stands, we're given a choice between all the souls stored in the star being grand, or most of them being petty or common. There isn't a choice here, it's math. I really wish there were honestly some kind of disadvantage for choosing this, like a permanent curse from Azura or a limit on the number of souls it could contain. It's really sad how Bethesda's writers have no understanding of real conflict or understand why a catch 22 is so engaging.

RP-wise, there IS a choice here.

Is your character good or evil? Lawful or chaotic neutral? How you roleplay your character can affect which gem you choose. Of course, for people who don't give a [censored] about roleplaying, it's a simple calculation, but EVERYTHING becomes a simple calculation for them.

Therefore it really depends on the player.
