Dear Zenimax Online Studio's: Things to consider!

Post » Fri May 17, 2013 8:42 pm

So I just got through watching your amazing http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/news/post/2013/05/15/first-look-at-gathering-and-exploration video and it has spurred me to create this post.

I am in total awe with how interactive you're making ESO and I would like to see you take the next step in the developmental process. We already know "Housing" is not in for launch but it may make an appeareance sometime after but what I am requesting is to "GO ALL-IN" with ESO and add in those little things that make MMO's special and add some of these old school MMO elements into the game, if not for launch then soemtime shortly thereafter.

Things like:

  1. Armor Dye - One of those little things that sets each player apart and is huge for immersion, which I feel goes right along side interactive environments that you're creating currently.
  2. Player Housing and Guild housing.
  3. Exotic weapons - Things like Melee Quater Staffs, Spears, Polearms, Crossbows, Chakrams. (Man were those fun in Kingdoms of Amalur)
  4. Removal of Token Based gear economies - I want to find items that drop not farm tokens to buy items.
  5. A form of Companion system similar to Skyrim.
  6. A meaningful achievement system - i.e. not a system that lets you aquire titles or track how many of a certain creature you've killed. Go all-in and add a reward system or some kind of meaningful reward for completeing achievements.
  7. Large group activities associated with PvE.

Those are jsut some of the things off the top of my head but all are meaningful and will go along way to creating replayability and sustainability for player retention.

3) Except for the chakram (which is out of place in Tamriel), I'd call all of those basic waepons. Those should be in by default (and yes, it is disappointing that they aren't)

5) Companions emphasize single player gameplay. Not a great idea in an MMO.

1) armor dye is nice, but I wouldn't call it immersive. There is no real evidence that anyone actually 'dyed' armour

my thoughts

1. 100% agree. armor dye should be in the game. anything that allows people to be even the slightest bit more unique is a good thing

2. would be nice to have these also. i can wait though

3. give or take with me on this one. if they are in thats cool if not no big deal. thats just my opinion since i dont like most of the mentioned weapons. btw chakrams were fun in amalur

4. games tend to do this to give people a chance to progress in case they are having bad luck with drops. it also allows people to solo if they want to. i am ok with it but it should not be used for end game gear

5. no no no no no. want a companion? find players to group with. please keep any and all companion systems out of this game

6. i love achievements. i want tons of them. i want hard to get ones and basic ones. i want an achievement for having a level 50 in all 3 factions. i want some to give rewards also

7. agree

Look, I don't really care if companions are in the game or not, but they technically COULD be just fine in this game. Just have them only in the single-player portion of the game. You wouldn't really need them in any other part of the game other than single player. But they could add to the story experience/narrative of the single-player segment. I mean, Dawnguard would have really svcked without Serena. She moved the story along in an interesting way. Not saying the game needs, should, or will have them; just saying that they could easily work in the game.

All good things except the Chakrams, they are awesome but dont really belong... even though i love em in KoA :)

Companions are BAD for a MMO i think, unless they are tied to the single player quest line only and even then its still a big maybe...

I think the only place for them in an MMO is as it winds up and the population has diminished and you cant find people or groups to run with...

Please Zenimax don't include them!

I thought SWTORs attempt at using companions in the game was praiseworthy, but, I don't know, it just didn't really work out for me all that well. I guess it felt weird having an NPC following me around like that in a multiplayer game. Maybe if done correctly it wouldn't be as bad, but I think it would be best if they didn't include them in the game and just stuck to pets.

yea really wish they would put in all those weapons. Would add a lot of diversity to the game instead of the same 4 weapon types they're giving us. I would get to make my halberd wielding redguard battlemage again from morrowind. Don't really see why they didn't include more weapon types.

Or I just don't care about a unique artifact, or see any reason to drag it in as a full weapon category, particularly when they're missing basic and relevant things like throwing knives and thrown spears/javelins.

It had some positive elements (mostly as story tie-ins), but the major effect was to emphasize that the game was for solo play, and other players could largely be ignored. The major gameplay effect was to take a healbot and unlock easy mode.

(1) I don't think people understand the armor crafting system. Instead of dye the crafter has the power to create what the armor piece looks like. when you create the item there is slots for ingredients to add you can make the same item but with many different appearances, like racial armor unigue to each race (9 playable and a lot of other races in the game) on top of that ingredients will add other things like accessories. So there will be a lot of combinations and styles to choose from that come with differnet looks and colors. To me this system is a lot more realistic and better.

I would like a personal house as it was very cool in DAOC. For a guild hose I think they are going more with the Cyrodiil zone and wanting your guild to take control of a keep or tower, putting your banner on it, adding things to it and upgrading it and the guards that protect it, basically its your guild home and you need to protect it

Daedric Crescent doesn't look like a chakram to me...they're ranged weapons primarily. Daedric Crescent is more like a really unique melee weapon, like those things Klingon's use (don't bother nerdspeaking at me nobody cares).

i agree with most of it with the exception of 5 and 6. Swtor ruined companions for me, it just took to ,uch away from th multi play aspect of the game and in the end they felt usless. as far as 6 i just never cared for achivments, just how i feel about it. What you you mean when you say large group activities?

I'm with you on all of those but the companion system, if you're gonna have a companion then it should be limited to things like an animal with a meaningful decision tied to choosing it. Also the token system. Yes, they can be a bit annoying when you have 30 of them for different things but they do offer an alternative system for when gold is in a large abundance etc.

Looking at the armor in all the videos all I see is dark browns, blacks and grays. One of the greatest things about GW2 was the ability to dye your armor and I loved my Red. Gold and Orange themed suit that looked bad ass. I am 100% positive that you will not see that color combination in TESO. Hence Dyes should be added.

1. Mods should help you out there, as I core game feature, it could be annoying for certain people (like me)

2. They know, they said it will make appearance in expansions

3. No, it doesnt fit the concept of current weapon skill lines. Its most likely, in future content they will add some with respective new skill lines, their progression system is basically built for that

4. I praise twice Vehk to not have that nasty stuff in game. Unfortunately PvP already works with such currency

5. Its an MMO, why grouping with script when you can group with people?

6. There is no need for that in MMO games, its just recent trend. My character growing more powerful, his gear getting better, his reputation among the real people around improving, those are the only achievements that bare meaning to me

7. They know, it will be there, it just wont be the only way to access top tier gear as people are used to in old MMOs so there still will be massive moaning around it

ZOS said that only UI mods will be allowed for their game. Things like armor dye mod isn't a UI mod. So don't expect that there will be any type of mod like that.

When did they say that? Last I remember was Matt Firor saying lua will be moddable. Not as I care much, Im absolutely fine with ZOS creations - I would just personally hate dye system and pink daedric armor

Mods will be very limited. UI is about the best you can hope for because it is too easy to create cheats even with simple texture mods. Even some UI mods can be considered cheating.
