Deathclaws: How Can I Win Now?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 10:07 pm

So, I think I'll create a topic which will create less flame upon myself than my last one, and talk about actual gameplay.

Here's what my tactic was in the quarry. I had Lily and ED-E with me, and I'm not in hardcoe mode, so they won't die. I was at 100 in Energy Weapons and Guns. I would sneak from far away, and fire my Marksman Carbine with Armor piercing rounds, so as to attract one Deathclaw at a time. This worked for a while. I would shoot it as it ran down the ledge, Lilly would intercept and do what she could, then it would kill ED-E, and by this time I have my special Plasma Rifle (forget the name) and I'm unloading on the bastard. (And plasma, apparently, is no good against the super skin they have, either.)

Then I snuck deeper into the quarry. I saw the Alpha Male, so I did the sneaking lure trick. Suddenly every Deathclaw in the area comes down upon me at once, killing Lily within a single swing of her sword and ED-E got swatted down like a fly. And here I am with an army of the two alphas and two or three more Deathclaws besides hitting me over and over at high speeds, killing me almost instantly.

I even went back to Very Easy just to get trough this, to no avail. I used Med-X, Psycho, you name it. What am I doing wrong? Is there a trick? Or are the Deathclaws just plain broken now? And why can't armor piercing rounds beat the damage treshold of bare skin? Bullets go through alligators like butter, so I don't think Deathclaws should have super skin. Or if they should, how can they move like cheetahs on Jet!?

Well they are the apex creature foe in the game and have been fixed to reflect just how dangerous they should be unlike the 'fluffy kittenlike' DC Deathclaws.

In Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics their only 'soft' spot was their eyes everywhere else their DT was very high and you could quite easily be slaughter by even a couple of them if you were not carefull.

They're there to stop you push you into going the long way round pretty much. If you've got some caps, you might want to try getting the sniper rifle, then getting the suppressor for it, Maybe an anti material rifle aswell, then sit back and take your shots. Boone can be a help here, but any of the followers are good, just to slow them down if they get too close.

Sloan deathclaws are easy when you know the trick, there are at least 2 areas in te quarry I know of where they cannot get to you, and both give the player a clean shot, the thing that's really needed though is a good supply of ammo, I used a combination of the cowboy repeater and ratslayer.

I would say they are easy meat, but if you have not got good sneak then they always know your there even if they cannot get to you, this means they shield more.

If you want to attract single at the time, use silenced weapon. Silenced varmint rifle would do the trick for example although silenced sniper rifle shooting in to the head is best. Or you can aim for leg and hope sneak critical will cripple it. Also consider placing mines in front of your position. More the better. Just put some space between them so that they do not ignite each other.

I heard that laser weapons are considered also silent but I don't have it confirmed.

I did the quarry last night, on normal difficulty at level 17, using a hunting rifle and the cowboy repeater. Both guns with all mods installed and using hand loaded ammo. All but two of the normal Deathclaws died to precise sneak attack head shots from the hunting rifle. The two that I only wounded got finished off with a hail of .357 JFP rounds as they where charging me. The Alpha and mom seemed confused as to where I was shooting from and both just got picked apart from the hunting rifle. I let my followers chill over in Slone.

Just take it slow and careful. Then do your best to engage the targets one at a time and be willing to fall back abit to let them calm down. Rushing it is only asking to be curb stomped.

i played on non hardcoe.at lvl 28
i used veronica and ed-e as decoys
had the perk criticals (dunno name)
grim reapers sprint
a high lvl guns 90 or so
a high sneak
power armor (heavy yes but you can take a bit more hits)
pumped myself full of gems psycho and med x
i used this machine

with sneak critical at the head you deal a lot of damage to them
and this machine works also good without sneak critical hits
i stil used about 20 stims but i could take the dc's in one streak out

It certainly does feel like you've achieved something when you take down a Deathclaw.

Plus it makes the wasteland a far more deadly place.

Since OP has 100% energy weapons I suggest YCS. Unique gauss which is really devastating in places like quarry.

Gauss rifle with Max-charge rounds will blow the head off of any deathclaw if you get a sneak critical off (well minus the Legendary of course).
Just remember to keep weapon repair kits on you because max-charge rounds WRECK your gun.

I've told this before but it may help you. I have the Incinerator and/or Heavy Incinerator, I find a place in the rocks where they can't get to me. I feel bad for Boone if he can't join me though but he does ok after I weaken them. I use the Heavy Incinerator like a rocket launcher, aiming it so it arcs way up and drops fireballs on the Deathclaws. If it doesn't hit on them right away (I'm so far away I can only see red ticks on the compass), I adjust the arc until a hit registers and then just keep raining fireballs on them. When the Mother and Alpha Male register, it's a good feeling and it's only a matter of time before they go down without laying a claw on me. It's not get in their face fighting but it works for me. I don't want to die. :D Good luck.

It's too bad we can't make some sort of poison in this game. The Dart Gun in Fallout 3 was great against Deathclaws and I always used it to cripple the legs. The only thing that makes a Deathclaw truly dangerous is their speed. One crippled leg can turn a Deathclaw into nothing more than a walking absorber of bullets.

Umm we can make poisons via the Survival skill, although they are applied to melee weaponry, I'm not sure if that also applies to throwing knives/spears as well or not.

A good tactic is if you know you can't get them before they hit you is go for the legs and cripples them. The Sniper and AM Rifle will do wonders. Pick up Boone and a Sniper with AP and you'd will pretty have a cake walk.

Really? I've not paid much attention to the Survival menu. There are only so many skill points I can use and they go towards skills like Science, Speech, Lockpick and Guns.

But unless the poison can be applied to a thrown/fired weapon, it will not serve my needs against Deathclaws.

The trick is to not go down into the quarry. Stay up high.

I've just been through the quarry (very hard). I had Rex and Raul with me (Raul with his standard weapon). I first visited the Khan encampment, and I began sniping from there. Standard sniper rifle, guns skill 65, armour piercing rounds. The first two deathclaws that I sniped each came charging over (separately, I should add), but Rex and Raul were enough to keep them occupied whilst I unloaded the Matter Modulator into them: they actually went down fairly quickly (I think one of the khans might have helped too; one ran away!). The remaining deathclaws in the quarry including the mother and the alpha male were no problem whatsoever: they never found out who was shooting them. Because I have low strength, using the sniper rifle at long range is rather hit-and-miss (very wobbly!), and I ended up killing most of the deathclaws with the Ratslayer. For safety, it's a good idea to aim for the legs. AP rounds.

Word. These are like FO1/2 Deathclaws. Deadly as [censored] and running in packs.

Don’t sweat it though, and maybe lvl up a bit. With the right guns/ammo (AMT helps a lot) and the right build, you’ll be able to take all comers.

I can one shot’em with a sniper rifle now and if a few get close, it can be a fight, but no real problem.

If you can sneak, or flee for your life to the conveyor belt in the center of the quarry, they can not follow you up. Now you just sit up there picking them off like fish in a barrel.

That's how I did it.

My Tactic for taking down the deathclaws at the quarry is to get a sniper rifle or the anti material rifle. Have a good supply of hollow point ammo. Sneak my way to the right side of the quarry. I then head for the big crane on the path while sneaking, aiming for their heads, it often kills them in on shot.. Climb up and snipe away till they are all dead. Having T-51b or Advanced PA is always good to have. Gives me alittle more time incase my one shot one kill plan fails. I use that to kill all the deathclaws I come across. Being stealth gives an added kick. Helps taking out the Legendary Deathclaw.
