Decreasing Distant Land Through Increased Exterior Fog?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:58 pm

I had a thought the other day that it'd be good for performance to add more exterior fog so as to hide distant land and reduce the number of objects that need to be loaded at a given time. However, I haven't seen any mods that implement this method. Is it possible to edit some setting to add more exterior fog? I'd love to fiddle with this settings a bit and see how much it improves stuttering and such.

No thoughts on this? I remember this could be achieved in Oblivion using the customization options of All Natural, but I don't believe something like that has been released yet.

You should edit the weather settings for each specific weather, I think. I assume it's the fog far distance setting.

In my experience increasing the fog distance of weather types only "fills" distant land and objects with the colour of the fog, it doesn't actually reduce draw distance. I don't know how to do it, but I'm interested in it as well.

I've experimented with fog settings a little bit so far. I'd intended to port my Morrowind Fog mod to Skyrim but discovered pretty quickly that the engine is different. I haven't managed to make fog settings operate as they did in Oblivion yet.

But if you were interested in increasing performance in Oblivion decreasing fog distance would not accomplish that. Turning of distant land and distant objects in your Options menu did that. You could then combine decreased fog with disabled distant land and objects. The fog would cover up the missing terrain and objects.

If somebody ever did figure out how to decrease fog distance in Skyrim I would certainly use it in a heartbeat, for aesthetic reasons.

This is more of what I was getting at. I personally can run the game without needing something like this, but I'd still use it to make the game run even smoother. Plus I loved the fog from Morrowind; it really adds a lot of mystery to the wilderness and so forth.

I played Oblivion this way because I prefered the way it looked, and it made the world feel bigger and more mysterious. It'd be nice to have the same option in Skyrim. Unfortunately lowering the distand land settings never actually removes it.
