Destroying buildings with one click

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 4:28 am

So one of the only thing I did not like about fallout 4 from last night was the ability to magically destroy and collect materials from seemingly everything possible.

To me this takes away all realism, I think it's great I can build bases and all but at the cost of every building I see?

Does this mean I'll be able to destroy any building I see?

What do you guys think? Did I miss something about it or do we just not know enough yet?

We don't know enough yet.

As far as deconstruction timers go, I hope it doesn't force me to wait RL time for it. If it forces a time change like the wait menu I don't mind

I might have to watch the footage again, but didn't he go to the workbench first? It might be a sort of mode and is only effective within a radius of the site (which are said to be specific and limited within the game).

It sounded to me watching the demo that there were certain areas set aside for building, like Hearthfire in Skyrim. Likely only the buildings in that area will be able to be dismantled but it looks like you might be able to get scrap anywhere to build your house/settlement.

If I had to guess, there are only some buildings that can be completely salvaged like that, and they're going to be confined to the larger sites where you can construct things. You won't be able to run around and destroy every structure on the horizon.

This is true, he only destroyed the buildings where he was building his fort. I hope this is true because that would be awesome, destroying any building I see might cause me to go overboard

This. It was most likely only the building menu of his settlement. Noone want to invest 10 hours just to destroy his own settlement...

definitely won't happen for _every_ building, since some will be needed in quests etc :-)

I could just imagine a house full of raiders thinking they where safe inside, then *poof* they're standing out in the open being shot at.

Like others said, I also got the impression this would only work in the areas where building was allowed.

I'm pretty sure that's a special mode you enter to assemble/disassemble structures.

I was rather impressed at this feature. I always did complain about people leaving junk lying around in the hubs in previous games. You guys have been living in New Vegas for how long? And you can't even manage to move a few broken down cars, or some bricks? Come on, make the place look good at least. Now I can do just that. I'm about 75% excited at cleaning stuff up, and 25% excited about rebuilding stuff.

I wonder if there are specific foundations you have to build on, or if you can expand foundations, or if you can put it anywhere and everywhere within the building zones. I've also wondered if you can assign some buildings to specific individuals and make it their 'home'.

But yeah, other than customizing my guns, this is probably my favorite feature I've seen thus far.

I can just imagine the raiders on bridge and then all of a sudden the bridge is gone and then they only fall when they realize that there is no bridge left.

I'm pretty sure I heard during the conference or a post interview that just like building your limited to a certain area so you can only deconstruct full houses, buildings, etc in your settlement(s) area(s). Also I heard settlements and something about trading between them so we know its more then one area where we can deconstruct buildings, materials, etc. (I believe it was during the post conference interview please don't make me find the quote I've gotta go to sleep and wake up before work in 4 hours)

What if I want a pristine home and not some raggedy shack? Surely there's some pre-war paint/drywall somewhere where I can at least make it look better. Still, my own customizable raggedy shack is nice too.

All I know is that I can't wait to build up my own little fort with an illuminated sign saying "[censored] Off" on the outside that overlooks firetraps and auto-turrets so that when the bandits come running to their doom, at least they died with a warning.

That's another thing.

When I was a kid, we had sheetmetal and pieces of wood, and we made better shelters than the people in Fallout. They have some horrible builders in the apocolypse. I remember walking into Megaton and thinking 'wtf?'; like seriously, we built better stuff than that as kids.

I'm wondering if this base-building feature will only be a shameless rip-off of the great Real Time Settler mode or are they going to include something original and meaningful in it.

Sure, then you also remove the ground from beneath, letting them fall into the endless depths while you slowly rise to the clouds with a loud laughter. So yes, I'm pretty sure it's only allowed with own buildings.

Howard said that the player can have Brahmin caravans travelling between his settlements. He also stated that there'll be plenty of areas to build upon.

Wonder what advantage trade caravans will offer? Increase economy, attract vendors, get better equipment?

It looks like it require foundations however this is just to have something to build on, one obvious mod feature will be to put down building foundations.

Defenses and power looked like could be placed everywhere. So you could set up sort of an miniature fort in an fast traveling spot who tend to spawn enemies.

My guess is that you can salvage everywhere but it will be limitations, like only sharks.

I doubt you can salvage just any building. Where would the NPCs live or the quests lead?

Even if you can salvage in ANY location, I suspect you can only salvage buildings that are in such a state of disrepair as to be hollow props.

Interestingly, I saw some of the custom buildings being built off the foundations. Maybe the foundations are a starting point? Likewise, a lot of the balcony-like and overhanging structures were hanging over the foundations boundaries too.

And I wonder how high you can build up. I saw one building about five stories high or so.

Wonder if vendors are restricted to stalls? I want to have a bartender in my saloon! Everyone must wear cowboy hats, and the only record on the jukebox will be Hank Williams.

I would personally prefer a time penalty on all construction, and for you to require the proper tools to do so.

For example:

Break down a building?
2 hours with a sledge hammer.
6 hours with a regular hammer.

12 with no tools at all.

Convert tires into rubber?
1 Hour with flame-thrower.
3 Hours with bladed weapon.

Impossible without tools.

Things like that. Doing so I think would fee far more realistic. You could also require special perks in order to build certain things.
