Destructoid's Thoughts

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:41 am

Well, go YouTube Destructoid (DTOID) and look up today's show. They review current information and speculate on it. Go ahead, go take a look then come back here and give your opinion on it.

Now, I'm fully aware that no -true confirmed information- has come out yet, but with what's seen here and with this show normally being very reliable I am quite depressed with it. Do you think that they're accurate and what do you think about their ideas? So yeah, shoot away.

A lot of Tara's reasons for being on the edge on TESmmo are completely valid. I don't blame her. When I first heard that a TES MMO was coming out I was like, "I can not wait!" But now, I'm not so sure.

Exactly, that's the same way that I was. I was hyped, I completely believe that this would be the next-gen winner that the market has been waiting for. Sadly my hopes seem to be misplaced at the moment and that I can only hope that they gut the system and re-do it. Whether it takes another few years or not I'd rather see it done right than done wrong. I'm tired of seeing the same old, same old. Hype it up a bit more, ya know?

You got to realize is they started working on it in 2007 and like what one of the destructoid guys said, Oblivion probably was not even out for a year. So they probably had a different vision back then.

I agree with a lot of thier critisimis but they also didnt really talk about all the other parts of the gameplay that make TES Online more like GW then like WoW.

But yeah back in 2007 things were diffrent, its a problem with long devlopment games like that.

True, but Morrowind would have provided a VERY good base concept to work off of.

I disagree with this in 2007 Oblivion and Morrowind where very much big commercial success so why would they make a game that has features NONE of those games had becuase people liked real time combat player housing becoming a were wolf, colecting trophies stealing bread and Oblivions Graphics were Light Years ahead of the screen shots of this game.

THis is a quick shake bake.

I think Oblivion had been out for about a year or so in 2007. But see, the thing is they are developing a game based on ideas and strategies from 2007, but they're releasing (maybe) the game in 2013. The model game they envisioned back in 07 is, to be frank, running a bit ragged as of late, and we already see others starting to deviate ever so slightly from that. This game doesn't appear to be at all.

As for Morrowind...let me say this. The only things I would consider good from that game are the environment and the story (especially the villain). The political tensions between the factions were very interesting. However, the combat and gameplay was pretty crap. That being said, I still regard it as my favorite ES game. Those two factors really do make up for some shortcomings. Its a shame many games today shy away from those two aspects. And mods, lets not forget that.

It's a shame they didn't announce the game sooner when there was still enough time for fan feedback to help shape it. Now we're only a year from release and it's unlikely that anything will change, or at least not the things fans really want to see change, like the combat system.

The thing is, the things they stripped out have been with the series since 1996 (unrestrictive classes, skilled-based leveling instead experience-based), or 1994 (real-time combat, first-person perspective). TES's popularity didn't start with Oblivion, so it's a rather lame excuse to say "Oblivion was only out a year and they didn't know about Skyrim". There's over a decade's worth of popular TES games to go on since they started in 2007 (yes Battlespire and Redguard flopped, but they were also rather standard games for their genre, which makes TESO all the more worrisome).

Not by today's standards, obviously. But it was a fantastic game for its age.

Geez, they are making the same mistake as everyone else: Comparing it to Skyrim.
"What is Skyrim without dragons, hurr durr?". Evidently not being aware the series has changed considerably over time. An MMO in the TES universe is perfectly viable, and first and foremost, it has to be a good MMO. Comparing it to the main series will be it's downfall.

I've got to say that I disagree with that. While true, it has to be a good MMO, it should be serving to fill the wants and needs that the fans have long loved of the Franchise, Bethesda or not. We've come to expect in-depth, visceral gameplay, and with what this game is so far being described as, well.. it just doesn't seem to be meeting that standard. Although I will give it that it's extremely early to be giving ideas and thought on what's truly going to be put in the final version of the game; as it is, in no doubt, still in Alpha phase, it's just that with what we hear there's nothing really in the game so far, for the die-hard fans that have been with the series for years the kind of depth that we're hoping to see.

Again, let me restate, it is early, and is subject to change, but this is how things seem to be playing out right now.

they described a visceral deep combat system similar to guild wars 2. thats really not that bad when compared to skyrim...which while being really great to look at does not take much player skill [unless you use dukepatricks combat]

I don't describe deep and visceral combat in the terms of Guild Wars 2, while good for the styling of the Guild Wars IP it doesn't fit with the Elder Scrolls in the slightest, at least in my opinion. After playing WoW for four years I'm tired of button mashing.
