Detail Texture Lag

This lag is not just on the PS3, its also on PC:

I thought Mega Texture was suppose to eliminate this? Is this something that can be dealt with? :(

This is happening for me too on PS3. Stack, do you know if this occurs on the 360 version as well? As far as I can tell, the texture lag only happens when "outdoors". I hope this can be fixed with a patch. All that needs to be done is for ID to release code to make the "transition" effect of the texture detail more smooth and less noticeable (when going up close or moving away from objects). I know this detail texture lag has been present in many, many games for the past 6 years. It's quite common. What isn't common is how easy it is to notice. Usually the transition is smooth.

I don't know what is the state on Xbox360 because I haven't seen any Youtube videos on it yet, only trailers/press demos/ previews, not one from consumers. Although, I've been hearing from others in other forums that its occurring across all platforms. I'm hoping a patch can remedy this as well, but being the cynical person that I am probably not. I think this is the drawback of using Mega Textures, managing render what to render and what not to render since its all just one big massive texture on the get go. I think they went to blurry route, blurring stuff out that's not in your view, but the problem is the blurred out detail is not reacting fast enough for the camera movement. This is what I think anyways.

I hope this is not true; about them "probably not" fixing it due to what you explained about mega textures. Is mega textures an element of the ID Tech 5 engine? There has to be SOME way for them to simply "speed up" the render and blurring out process so it's at least "less" noticeable? What do you think? Where is the best placeto report a problem like this to ID/Bethesda so they will definitely see it? Forums here? Twitter/facebook? Some direct email route? I was extremely excited for this game and this texture lag is really taking away from the experience.

This forum is adequate, I've sent them question about it through http://twitter.com/#!/RAGEgame as well.

This is a problem across all platforms so I'm sure they know about it. Still, you would think if it could be fixed it would have been BEFORE release. Anyway, Im still really enjoying the game.

I've just made it out of the cryogenic chamber and received my 1st quest. I diffidently appreciate the 60fps, I can tell the shooting is going to be fun and smooth. Overall, I like the feel of the control, but they really need to get rid of the blur. I just can't see myself playing that long with the constant blur.

Same PS3 texture lag here, otherwise an amazing game.

The problem is only in that it's such an overwhelming contrast to the high level of detail you just saw or are seeing on one object, turn to look left and very low detail pixel blur on a railing next to you looks just awful in comparison, then zwoop it draws in. Also mainly outdoors in large open areas is where it's noticeable.

The strange thing is I don't see this while driving. Maybe I'm concentrating on the driving but I don't see the puke pixel blur while driving at high speeds and that's when I think you'd see it more.

i find the whole situation very disturbing with the PR people saying "yeah it works really well"
works really well in comparison to what? something that doesnt work at all?
its scary that they knew about this when they were saying that
theres no way the ps3s they tested this on were different from ours

yes, the game does play smoothly
yes, i have played it for several hours and im really enjoying it

but the bottom line is: the game doesnt work properly
no game that has ever been developed for- or ported to- a console has performed like this= it is unacceptable

i stood in a location in the city for more than 15 seconds (thats 15 actual seconds, theyre longer than you think) and waited for all the textures to load so i could get a good look at the art

imagine you opened your eyes and the world wasnt there for 15 seconds?
youd **** in your pants

if the textures werent so mind bogglingly detailed, i wouldnt be complaining as much
but the art team has got to be pissed off

i know nothing about programming or game design, but if it was possible to sacrifice some framerate for a LITTLE BETTER texture streaming i would gladly accept that

This I agree with, but I doubt it would be as clear cut as that.

I don't think anything took me as long as 15 seconds to load. If it did I wasn't looking that closely when it did.

The textures seem to work fine in smaller areas including Wellspring which is large, it just doesn't try to include vast mountain ranges, stone formations, etc. that are perfectly rendered.

I think you can fake the distant stuff too for the sake of the close stuff and the distant object could be lower def. or just slightly blurred. It would look distant, maybe shrouded in some fog, dust, mist.

I do think id has set a new standard in gaming for hi-def textures and that's one of the things they do best.

If anyone is curious how the PS3 stacks up against the Xbox360 in terms of streaming textures, here's the video comparison in hd: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/ps3-rage/721805

Pay attention to the parts where the video plays 25% speed, clearly Xbox360 has a far better streaming. Obviously the SPUs didn't do much.

Tim Willit's own words in a interview: "The extra cores are assigned to work on textures in the background, as there's tons of visual data," Willits claimed. "[...] We load compressed JPG data, and assign those extra cores to work on these textures, and uncompress them in the background so there is no nasty pop up, or blurred textures." http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1022158/rage_ps3_version_uses_every_core_no_nasty_texture_popup.html

Nothing but PR statement after all :)

This is why my guts tells me nothing will be done about this. I hope I'm wrong, I hope a fix can be done.

words

I agree... I have Rage for PC and rented it from Redbox on PS3 because I couldn't get it to work on my computer. Imagine my surprise when I started the game and saw the ugly texture pop-in/streaming. Ugh.

I can't help but feel this isn't what the team (art team especially?) wanted to see. Hopefully they'll fix it... if other games can do it without drawing so much attention, I think Rage can too. I can't recall a specific game but I do remember when loading save games, specific games will stream in the textures but after that, I never notice it. I've been playing Oblivion on PC and I do notice it but it's not much of an issue because it only happens when loading new areas. You could also mod it to load up more cells but I haven't.

Anyway, overall it's fun I just wish they would minimize the graphical interference since it's so distracting.

After all I read in preview interviews about this game running smoothly with no texture pop-in; I am sorry to say that I am very disappointed with the texture pop-in. It is distracting to a point that it detracts from the enjoyment of the game. I am hopping that id and Bethesda will get this issue resolved. Thank you for your time.

On a PS3 I don't see this while racing at all! Strange, that's when you'd think it would have trouble keeping up with the speed of travel and drawing in textures you going to see next.

This is true. This is how it is for most of us I think. When your driving though I don't think you will be able to notice the texture loading on objects and environment because your moving much faster than when on foot, so the driving and texture loading is somewhat irrelevant (compared to the rest of the game on foot).

If you sit on a vehicle not moving and just look around, you will see less pop-in than when you are off the vehicle in the same place. I know the POV is different, but this leads me to believe that the excessive pop-in is a bug and should and hopefully will be squashed.

Hope is a great thing. I want to hope this is true too. I waited in such great anticipation for this game only to have my joy crushed by this texture popping. I hope Tim Willits and team see this thread and all the other areas where people have reported this texture lag.

I just got to the Dead City place where I'm supposed to find the defibrillator upgrade, I must say I thought my standards couldn't get any lower than the blurry texture lag, now I have to accept that on top of that there are major places in the game with low res textures. Dead City just reaks with low res textures which really compliments the texture blur pop-ins. Wow, for a second I actually thought I was playing Mine Craft. Wow, just wow.

Don't get me wrong, gameplay wise I'm absolutely loving the game but the texture pop-in is terrible at some points. I tried to ignore it but even when I'm in a firefight I can still notice it.
Hopefully ID releases a patch that allows us to do a full install/uncompress the data. I can tolerate some texture pop in but especially in the wasteland it's absolutely brutal.

im having the same issue aswell, its a beautiful game but the slow texture loading completely ruins it, its not so noticeable when playing on my larger lcd hdtv from a lil further away, but when playing on my smaller led hdtv up closer its much more noticeable. otherwise so far its a good game i havnt got far yet an am only a couple missions in, im wondering if the same happens on xbox i originally got it for xbox by mistake( i do own both consoles tho) an took it back an swapped it for ps3, now im thinking maybe i should have kept the 360 version now, lol. there are a couple reports of similar texture lag happening on 360 but not as many.
i really do hope its something that can be fixed, i do hear my disc spinning everytime the textures load though so i dont know if its just slow loading them an is something were just gonna have to deal with.

This just proves that id is just not as good as they advertised to be. I mean we all know what the PS3 is capable of and 6 years development should have been enough for something like this not to happen. They really can't blame the hardware, or if they do, then there is enough proof out there to show them that they just aren't that good to handle PS3 programming.
The PS3 version is just not playable at the moment, I will not buy broken / unfinished products, and will definitely going to think twice before buying id products in the future.
It's a shame really, I really thought id had something to prove, but the only thing they proved was that they can't handle what they thought they can handle...
