DiD server anyone?

Post » Fri Aug 16, 2013 2:57 pm

Thought I'd throw the idea out there.

One of the things that bothers me about MMOs is the fact that there are respawns. It just seems totally immersion breaking to think that you're in a "persistent world", but characters respawn when they die.

At least in an SP game you can reload and pretend the death of your character never actually happened... but in an MMO your friends watch your character die and everything.

Easy way to take care of this:

Link respawn to an actual thing, like a spell, item, etc, etc.

Every player could start with one freebie, just because. If it's used up, gotta get a new one if you want to not die permanently.

Maybe a ring or amulet that teleports your body to your guild HQ? You'd have to recharge it with soul gems and what not.

Just a little odd that thousands of people would have some powerful artifact like this.

Gameplay > Lore.

You really going to make people lose a level 50 character in a DiD environment easier because of things like say... my router deciding to die on me?

Why not? Its just a game, the problem with MMOs is they don't dare to be different. =/ I'd rather lose my level 50 character and have fun, than things be like a chore.

Sorry I know what's actually important in the game production process.

Forgive me, I'm sure there's many people on here who wish that Master Chief could throw his Plasma Grenade a half mile in-game, because in canon he's strong enough to do it.

Ok, you have "fun" losing all your time and effort with your character because of a real life rain storm, go ahead with that.

DiD where your character's survival relies on his and your skills? Okay, but I probably won't play it.

DiD where you character's survival relies on your internet connection and other players? Hell no.

One Leeroy Jenkins away from a mass slaughter of characters that can never be revived.

Yeah, I mean its a game, if you're just gonna get frustrated and rage.....why play? That's the main reason I don't like MMOs. They're all the same AND they all are like a chore more than a game. Like he said, however, there would be specific servers just for that type of gameplay.

Also, many would view all the time and effort one puts into any video game a waste of time and effort anyways.

Falling back to the "all video games are a waste of time and effort" is kind of shallow in a debate there guy.

The problem is that MMOs, at least as they're typically imagined these days, are all about the end game. It's not the journey, but the destination. I personally don't play like that, but it's what you typically see. High level characters power leveling lowbies so they can get up to raiding level faster, grinding for an hour to get level X for a new cool ability, etc.

If TESO is handled the same way, DiD servers would become dead zones where all content past level 20 is empty, because anyone who reaches that content either dies or is too scared of his own shadow to risk the time he's invested.

I'm not falling back to that. I had no reason to fall back. No one would force you to play on this server, it'd be like a PvP or PvE. It is just simply a choice.....something to spice up the MMO industry, cause frankly they're all dry and bland. I was pointing something out, most people would.

Also, I have a name! QQ

Yes, choosing to play on a DiD is a choice, no one is refuting that. And having one is fine.

But it's a terrible design decision to include a DiD server when people can lose their characters because of a real life rain storm. There is a large difference between being able to reload your last save because you felt cheated in your DiD run because of a glitch and being unable to get your character back at all because of something that isn't even connected to the game.

But if people choose that server, they're willing to take the risk.

Having that risk in the first place is a bad design decision. Period. There's no question about that. Literally there's zero question about that.

I don't think you understand, people that play on these servers would accept that that will most likely happen, I would. They would just think perhaps a concept different from every other MMO might sort of be fun? What am I talking about, all we need to do is replace taurens with khajiit, trolls with argonians, have the dwarves be the dwemer, and draneia be altmer. What on earth was I thinking! A not rehashed feature, nonsense.... /sleep.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='-_-' />

On the subject of actually fixing the problem, perhaps a buff that teleports you to a safe zone right before death?

Also, I don't mean to rage on you. I'm just very bitter over MMOs =/

Different concepts are fine.

But you're missing the actual problem.

It is a very bad decision to make a server that allows players to lose dozens, if not hundreds, of man hours of time and effort spent because of an uncontrollable outside factor like a thunderstorm or a car crashing into a power line twelve blocks down the street.

People would get very pissed off if this was allowed to happen with no fail-safe. It is far, far better to have the player need to just go get a replacement item due to being disconnected than losing a character completely due to being disconnected.

I kind of like the idea of, say a mage in town keeping a vital sign type of deal on you, for a fee, then teleporting you out harms way right before death.

But it makes more sense then everybody finding a magic stone.....

Also, you're not forced into purchasing it, plus to me atleast, it just sounds more interesting.

Who says the "magic stone" is given to you from a quest? You may just end up having to pay a high level mage to give you the item in question.

Still, the fact that there is an unlimited amount of these stones just seems a little odd =p
