Dishonored: First look preview

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 10:13 pm

Just browsed across this http://www.gamespot.com/events/quakecon2011/story.html?sid=6327736&pid=636040&tag=topslot;title;1 and I've got to say the supernatural bit sounds interesting!

Do these powers come with some form of recharge time or can we use them infinitely?

Do existing powers get more powerful maybe later on? Like being able to possess bigger creatures.

Are there other supernatural beings in the world of Dishonored? I like being special!

Good article,But do we do the side missions after we do the current quest or during?

The preview makes it sound like Thief + Deus Ex + Hitman + interesting magic for which I can't come up with a good game example... And Dark Messiah combat. Nice. :D

And some Half Life 2 as well if the description of the world is anything to go by.

reading the comments on that preview and seeing how half of them are THIS SOUNDS LIKE X + Y BUT WITH Z makes me a little (maybe irrationally) angry. it's like there's maybe thirty different games that anybody actually knows about and every other game is just a combination of two or more of those games.

i mean i get the need to LIKEN THINGS to other things because it helps to be able to understand things, but this [censored] cheapens original ideas and makes every new title sound like a derivative rehash that does nothing new, which is pretty much absolutely not the case AT ALL with this game.

ed povuholo i posted this largely without seeing your post and i'm not really including you in this because you at least know where this [censored] is coming from and aren't just going ITS LIKE BIOSHOCK MEETS MASS EFFECT CUZ IS FIRST-PERSON BUT WITH A RENEGADE SYSTEM I THINK???

Eh, you shouldn't get too angry about it. It's a common practice. People like to compare new things to things they know. It helps them feel like they have a grasp on it and it makes it feel more familiar (and less scary) to them. It's also a lot easier/quicker than actually explaining all the main design principles, mechanics, and features of the game. For someone who is too lazy (or too busy) to read in depth, this provides them with a starting off point. Plus, it generates some interest among those who enjoyed the games they are comparing it to.

At this point I have no problem saying that it seems like... Dark Messiah meets Deus Ex, meets Hitman, meets Thief, meets Half Life 2, meets a crazy scientist who blends them all together.

Arkane themselves are quick to mention influences, so it's to be expected that people will compare it to other titles. Also it's hard to pin it down to a particular genre, so describing it as a blend of titles is probably more useful than just saying 'action-RPG' which could be applied to games as diverse as Diablo, Deus Ex, Mass Effect, The Witcher, etc.

What annoys me is when people compare Dishonored to games that are nothing like it. Like people who compare it to Oblivion because Bethesda is publishing it. Okay, there might be some similarities if you look closely, but it gives a totally false impression.

Yup that's GameSpot. One day even the previews will get a score and people will judge a game based on that never knowing anything about it.

I feel bad for this guy though;

"Wow... This generation only has FPS... Give me a break already!!"

He doesn't know what he's missing. =/

I did my fair share of facepalming too when people were saying Deus Ex HR's gameplay looked like Mass Effect's.
