Dishonored Review RoundUp- Spoiler Free

Post » Mon Oct 08, 2012 6:54 pm

The embargo is lifted and there are reviews aplenty. But how do we know what to trust? Well, there are people who do not mind seeing the smoke and mirrors so that the illusion can be preserved for others, so to speak. This thread is to let fellow forumites visit the various news outlets with no anxiety. Right now I can say that the 1up.com review is safe reading and I will re-read the IGN review to vet that as well. In the interim, anyone who has done reading and is confident that something is spoiler-safe, please post the review link here.

http://www.1up.com/reviews/dishonored-review

There is a new one minute delay for new posts and topics. I assume edits fall under that purview as well so updates may have hiccups. The 1up review is glowingly positive in case you still don't feel comfortable actually reading it. A+

A fatal flaw in my plan. I can't read French. Anyone who can and is willing to vouch for those reviews would be appreciated.

I will mention here that the youtube review called "Dishonored Review - Justin Fassino" is filled with several spoilers, I do NOT recommend watching it for anyone!

Using Metacritic right now to be expedient and quick as I can. The third highest review, the only spoilery thing is a picture that appears to be ubiquitous amongst the reviews being posted by almost every site. It's really not going to impact you, especially if you don't know who the person is. Even if you know who it is, all you're seeing is this person was stabbed through the neck. It wouldn't register as a blip on a sonar readout, but I don't want to take the chance of omitting something that will end up being a spoilah to someone.

All text is safe. One ever-present picture (seen it in three reviews so far) may not be.

I didn't attest to his veracity about other titles (the accursed boss fights of DEHR have been mentioned once before in these very threads, having one dedicated to it), but in the interest of thoroughness it might have served me well to mention that. It does not invalidate his spoiler-free assessment. Just means that dude is human and trying to cobble together paragraphs (maybe not---I'm imagining many frenzied writers typing on Macs and PCs and Underwoods...yes even manual typewriters).

Reviewers may make bad comparisons, but as best as I can tell I will make sure no spoilers shall pass!

IGN didn't make the cut. While some of the things mentioned in their review have been said before, anyone who hasn't followed this like a bloodhound (or wolfhound, har har) can have a non-lethal option spoiled along with other bits and bobs. They're too big an outlet not to single out for saying you should avoid. I'd offer qualifications but I want to be cover ground. I'll try to retread if I can.

Write Gamespot off your list as well, they give off several scenes in their video that might feel revealing for some, also they hint at the storyline, telling you a small deal of info that most of us have not truly heard of at all regarding the storyline.

If you want to be safe, stay away from their review.

Metro GameCentral is a winner. Now I do have to write one qualification: the twelfth paragraph (they're very small paragraphs) has a sweeping generalization of moral choices that may read like a spoiler. I honestly don't believe it is and more than that, I am excited to know why or how this reviewer came to that conclusion. At a certain point, you can hamstring a prospective reviewer by making him or her afraid to say anything if the spoiler word is invoked. It gets a pass from me, but corroboration (I know---I'm trying to serve cake and eat it too. It's terrible manners and a contradiction of purpose that renders this thread potentially not helpful at all) from anyone else would be welcome.

Now I didn't watch the video(s). I've been focusing on text and GameSpot basically passed the text test in my book. However, when in doubt leave it out. Just avoid them altogether to be safe for now. I'll revisit the videos and see if the text is as injurious to a fresh experience.

Fair enough. This is how you make a spoiler tag. Don't use the spaces when you write with this code.

[ spoiler ] This is a spoiler [ /spoiler ]

So it should read like this.

Spoiler
This is a spoiler

If you wouldn't mind writing a brief snippet of what was a spoiler, it would help me immensely.

I think I know where you're talking about. Below the picture with the large fish on the table and the two guards there's an -ish sentence shortly after, right?

The current message will concern the content that would the spoilers of the Gamespot video review

Spoiler
There are several scenes showing Corvo being accused, or showing the face of the outsider etc. also they give off a hint to the story of where Corvo starts out and how the story develops from there, WHICH we haven't heard from Arkane at any Game Con or interview

Its all good, like i said they were ever so minor spoilers.
Lets say that i didnt know as much as i do now about the side missions.
Its hard to define whats a spoiler and whats not to different people, cause everyones seen different trailers/footage etc.
I read the game manual yesterday and that even had info that i wouldve prefered not reading....
Its prob time for my media blackout to start. 38.5 hrs til game time!

This can't be recommended and I know it has its own thread where there's contention with its last paragraph. It detailed a random encounter you can stumble upon so it's not suggested but it was illuminating in other respects. If I could cobble together the most cited pros and cons I would, but I believe that would be against forum policy. It might not be since it wouldn't be a direct transcription. I'd need a mod to confirm.

I'm glad you're taking it ok, but I really don't want to put a blemish on anyone's experience. I've just about hit the saturation point myself too lol. I did not watch any YouTube videos from people who posted, innocuous or otherwise.

I'm going to triple check. Still doing this all on my phone (no computer) so it goes slow already. Just bear with me to anyone who's using this as a guidepost. Ultimately it is subjective and I can only flag the specifics and maybe some of the broader applications of language used for reviewing. Otherwise, this would be impossible :P

Ok, back to reading!

Joystiq is a no-go. Two bloody sentences I can't unsee. This is like touching an exposed nerve.

Official X-Box Magazine (I'm going by the order of my preferred console. The preceding reviews were multiplatform but it's worth noting that you should get this for PC if you can. Less graphical issues and, if you're acclimated to them, greater control options. Arkane is primarily PC, but none of the publications have flat out slammed any platform. I believe that every version will be great.)

There's a spoiler if you haven't heard of every enemy type and odds are you haven't. It's a shame because otherwise I don't think it's bad. The negatives are suspect to me as they could be contingent on changing the difficulty for their biggest qualm. At this rate, there probably will be nothing consumable except something hand-crafted that will alert you of things mostly known already. You can't really address pacing without glancing references to how side-quests are delivered and other features. Maybe there's a Goldilocks review yet.

Destructoid: The opening paragraph could be a spoiler and mechanics are detailed in such a way that I didn't know before. It's one of the better reviews though for its thoroughness.

I need to take a break. I'm not sure of whether the aims of this thread is possible, and I'm sorry for wasting anyone's time. I'll resume reading in a little while to keep trying.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/10/08/wot-i-think-dishonored/#comment-page-3, except: there's one section about you showing up to someone's party, and how people react to you; and it tells you a little bit more about the overseers. Not biggies, in my opinion, but you be the judge. It mentions the hub area, too.
Otherwise totally spoiler free.

I just got home, and I'm very happy with all the great scores, but I'm not reading any reviews at all, sometimes even minor spoilers hurt you, even screenshots that I haven't seen before
