Disney Closes Lucas Arts

Post » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:24 pm

Well looks like us Star Wars fans got a the shaft today. This is depressing to hear. Sure the company hasn't been on roll lately but 1313 looked promising. There were also other projects in the works.

Add this to all the recent news about layoffs and closings and it's clear the industry is in some tough times financially.

It's probably a case of out with the old in with the new, it's sad to hear but I bet Disney has their own reasons for purging LucasArts...I wander what Mr. Plinkett has to say about this?

Wow, this is sad. During a large chunk of the 90s, Lucasarts was my favorite developer and publisher. Not that surprising though, they already started to walk down the swamp with the release of the horrible Star Wars: Masters of Ter?s K?si and then released lots of sub-par games since then. And now it's been plenty of years since they released anything good.

I don't how much this says about the industry being in "rough times" to be honest. Like you and the article both point out, LucasArts has svcked a fatty lately. It hasn't produced anything worthwhile since what... Battlefront 2? When the only thing you've got to hang your hat on in the last 10 years is like Lego Star Wars (which Lucas Arts doesn't even develop), you can't expect to stay in business.

Sad, but to be honest it's been a long time since we've seen anything great like X-Wing, Jedi Knight, KotOR, Battlefront, etc. come out of LucasArts.

I was simply saying that the industry is in rough times because of so many closing and lay-offs. Not because of why these things were happening.

Not really that sad. Name one good game they have come out with in the last ten years? You can't.

I heard Battlefront was good, but I have never been a Star Wars fan. I always was surrounded by huge Star Wars fans, though, and they loved the game.

Not really surprised LucasArts is gone. I doubt this means no more Star Wars games since the franchise is such a money maker.

If it means fewer terrible games clogging up store shelves, I ain't mad.

And thus my favorite production company of all time closes its doors.

Admittedly their best stuff was made a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) but there was a time when anything LucasArts made was absolute gold. Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Outlaws, X-Wing, TIE Fighter... I specifically became interested in game development so that I might one day work for them. Of course, that ship sailed as their development house lost steam, but now the door is closed forever, and I have to admit I'm a little sad. Good times though, may they long be remembered for their golden era.

Damn me and my smartphone posting. I was doing it at the same time as Miller but my phone was just too slow. :(

Anyway, I'm kind of saddened by this news, even though LA hasn't really done anything worthwhile for a long time. I did grow up on LA games so I have a lot of love for them. Hopefully, Disney will do something with their games.

Star Wars 1313 was in development and could've been decent.

Actually, according to the article it may not have been. No one is really sure though.

Lucasarts was great back in the day, but they haven't published anything really good since KotOR II and Republic Commando in 2005. Keeping them around would've been a waste of money. I'm still a little sad though.
