[HELP] Distant Object Settings

Argghhh this is driving me a bit crazy, notice how the mountains are shimmering? What could be causing this?
It seems to be only those mountains.

Resetting my heavily modded ini via the Launcher to the default (high settings) fixes it.
However using the Launcher and setting Object Detail to ULTRA makes it happen again.

Is anyone else getting this?

PS: Why did I post here? Because this is where the experts reside. :)

I don't see the mountains shimmering...

I see the clouds blinking though, and it might be something to do with the MipMapping settings on your video card.

I have the same problem as yours. The mountains ARE flickering, and it happens somewhere else as well. I don't know how to fix this. If someone has a clue, please post it.

I'm no expert on this by any stretch so take this advice with a large spoonful of salt.

If you're using NVIDIA try turning "Texture filtering - Anistropic sample optimization" Off.

I see it sometimes, too.

I think it's an engine problem because I've seen it in OB, Fallout 3, and Skyrim.

There's nothing that fixes it that I've seen.

I'm using Ati, should I try the same?

Z-fighting is caused when two meshes are competing for the same "slice" of distance from the camera, so the GPU just kind of randomly picks one texture to show in any given frame. It results in the meshes appearing to shimmer back and forth relative to each other.

A sorta-educated guess is that it's a problem with the LOD terrain's mesh. Keep an eye out for LOD terrain projects that aim to fix this, but expect it to take a while before the community has the knowledge and tools to tackle it.

Maybe?? As I said I'm the second farthest thing from an expert on this. If you have that option in your control panel it's worth a try.

Yeah, well, I've got nothing like that. I tried changing some settings, but with no result. I'll wait for an update or some mod. Thank you anyway.

Like I said the only way to fix the issue (currently) is to go to the Launcher and under Advanced turned the Distant Detail Settings down from Ultra to High.

I don't want to have worse graphics for a glitch that doesn't annoy me very much. I'll wait for a fix or a mod, thanks.

Antaurus over on Nexus suggested changing

fBlockMaximumDistance=100000.0000

This worked for me!

I get this too. Breaks immersion.

Where do I put "fBlockMaximumDistance=100000.0000" ?

It will be a line in the SkyrimPrefs.ini file in your Documents/My Games/Skyrim folder.

Just as a general disclaimer: You can open this file with any old text editor (like notepad). You should back this file up before making any changes to it.

Also, for a good introduction to what can be done through this and the Skyrim.ini file check out the Tweak Guide http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide.

For me setting it to that value made it better. Small bits still flicker, but at least half the mountainside of certain sections does not flicker anymore. The cpu toll is not that high for upping it either. considering it loads the landscape blocks a lot further back.
