Divayth Fyr, Corprus, and Hermaeus Mora theory

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:32 pm

So we've been seeing a lot of evidence on the forums that suggests Divayth Fyr will be making a comeback as a main character in Dragonborn, and we've also seen some compelling arguments that the strange creatures seen in the trailer are Corprus beasts and ascended sleepers. Plus, it's pretty much decided that we'll be visiting Hermaeus Mora's realm of Apocrypha. People have been trying to make sense of the three and their connections. I think I may have figured it out.

Divayth Fyr always mused the idea that Corprus was a "divine disease." Most of us assumed that the "divine" or god he referred to was Dagoth Ur. But consider this: Fyr is as old, if not older, than Voryn Dagoth. He lived through the War of the First Council, watched the fall of Nerevar and the rise of the false gods Dagoth Ur and the Tribunal. Would Fyr really dedicate so much of his time and energy to researching Corprus if it was created by Voryn Dagoth, nevertheless call it "the Divine Disease?" Plus, was Dagoth Ur really so clever as to create it?

I think Corprus was the disease of a real god. A daedric prince. Hermaeus Mora. Wasn't Corprus always in a league of its own when it came to diseases? Wasn't it strange that the only person to be cured of it was the focus of a prophecy heralding the end of the world? Didn't you always wonder why Corprus hollowed out the minds of its victims and grew tentacles in their place?

I believe Divayth Fyr, in the time between Morrowind and Skyrim, realized that the Divine Disease belonged to Hermaeus Mora. He is now constructing a great sanctum to reach Apocrypha and discover its ultimate secret. But the Dovahkiin somehow got pulled into Apocrypha instead of Fyr.

Hilarity ensues.

Perhaps it's too tramsmundane for some gamers, but the search for the Elder Scroll in the main game did get pretty juicy, and Hermaeus Mora is the closest prince to the idea or un-idea of the Elder Scrolls. So I suppose the scholars can have an epiphany while the less lore-savvy stagger about in incredulity, giving birth to their own fathers. Pardon me, I'm trying to channel my inner Telvanni in I-don't-give-a-crappedness.

But seriously guys, the TENTACLES. How did I not consider that before!!?

I thought Corprus descended from Dagoth-ur who in turn abused the heart of Lorkhan, an Aedra, to make his bidding?

Actually your arguments about Corprus possibly being linked to HM seems perfectly plausible :) I wouldnt be surprised if you are right.

i thought peryite would be a better fit for the creator of corprus he is the daedric god of pestilence and order, and as i recall one of his missions in skyrim involves disease ridden foes. Your ideas though are really good and i would love to see how if he does divayth fyr fits in to the new story line.

I used to think so too. But consider that the Tribunal never created any diseases, and Dagoth Ur never had tentacles or any major connection to anything with tentacles as the main distinguishing feature. But think of how DARK Voryn Dagoth became compared to the Tribunal. Servants eating their own flesh? Hollowed skulls? Corruption of dreams and sheer madness? Sounds like somebody sold their soul to a Daedric prince.

Lol except for Peryite being generally recognized as the lame cousin of Daedric princes. Although perhaps he will make an appearance. A lame one.

Also, consider Corprus is less a disease and more a blessing/curse. Pestilence is a bit too mundane.

I am actually considering the idea of Peryite making a cameo. That's not a bad idea...

correct. but still, it would imply a colossal retcon.

Not exactly. I don't remember it ever being explicitly stated that Dagoth Ur created the Corprus, only that he spread it. I just assumed he also created it.

I don't imagine unleashing Herma-Mora unleashing Corprus (damn mortals can't handle da divine blessings). Doesn't fit his demeanor.

Interesting idea, but why would someone who stole Lorkhan's power, arguably one of the strongest "gods" in this world, need the help of a Daedra to create Corpus. Expecially since Herma Mora isn't interested in anything disease related at all, that's Peryite's business.

He called it the Divine Disease because it flowed from the Heart of Lorkhan, not just because Dagoth Ur created it. It seemed from his explanation in Morrowind that Corprus formed a link to the Heart itself and the influx of energy from it supercharged the victim, twisting him with cancerous mutations but also making him immortal, strong and immune to disease.

The Tribual, Dagoth Ur and Nerevar had the heart, defenseless, at their disposal. a source of infinite power with no defense whatsoever.

Remember that Hermaeus Mora and the "Heart of Lorkhan" appeared in the same quest. I think there is more than meets the eye here.

SPOILER i don't know how to mark it on my phone :P No in Skyrim. The quest "Discerning the Transmundane." Supposedly the Heart of Lorkhan is inside the Dwemer lockbox, but it's actually the Oghma Infinium.

The tentacle monsters on the screenshots are actually Seekers and the Corprus-like zombies are Ashspawn (who look a little like human versions of Ash zombies).

It's certainly possible that Fyr's experiments in his Corprusarium, which he may have relocated to Solstheim, have resulted in an altered form of the disease that got out of hand, creating the Ashspawn. Maybe he did turn to HM for the knowledge to recreate the disease or was unwittingly doing his bidding. More likely, the extent of Mora's influence is the First Dragonborn main quest; and Fyr, the Telvanni tower and anything Corprus-related (if indeed they are in the DLC) would have its own sidequest, much like the Aetherial artifacts in Dawnguard.

Could it just be that the Ashspawn are in fact a new creature with a new name formed from the huge amounts of ash that fell from the red mountain. If you look in some of the screen shots you can see that the ground is possibly a very light grey aka ash colored and they actual have nothing to do with corpus at all.

Just throwing this in here as well, but one of the things Septimus said he did to curry Mora's favor was spread plagues in exchange for knowledge wasn't it?

"A plague here, a murder there..." Something to those lines is one of his ramblings about his exchanges with Mora if memory serves.

They are NOT Suspended Sleepers. There is a img on Bethesda's main website of one that clearly calls it a "Seeker". It looks to be some new Hermaeus Mora daedra.

I was fairly sure that Dagoth Ur created corprus disease, but I had to refer back to UESP to double check. From UESP itself:

Corprus, also known as the Divine Disease, is the most terrible of the ailments associated with http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Blight. The infection was created by http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dagoth_Ur and is spread by contact with a corprus beast or by specific curse. It destroys the mind of the sufferer and grotesquely deforms the body. It is not known how the transformation of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Sixth_House cultists into Ascended Sleepers and other monsters is related to Corprus. Some of the physical effects are similar, but the cultists remain lucid and attain a higher spiritual state whereas more mundane sufferers become mindless husks, like the common undead raised by necromancers.

Elderscrolls.wikia goes even further and says that Dagoth Ur created both blight storms and corprus. I didn't remember that part.

I'm rather sure that corprus won't be a major element in the story. We'll most likely get side quests about it, probably from Fyr, but that's it.

The blight was the main method of delivering the corprus 'blessing', so I wouldn't be surprised if Dagoth Ur was the architect behind that as well.

To the OP, I personally think you are seeing connections that don't exist.

This is the theory I'm subscribing to also. My bet is that they have more to do with the souls of the crashed Ingenium that caused Red Mountain to erupt in the first place and little to do with Corprus and the Blight which was supposed to of ended with Dagoth Ur.
