DLCs and the possible relation with "The Art of Fallout

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 2:58 am

Dear friends,

These days I received a good damn nice book, "The Art of Fallout 4", a must-have item for those who really liked this game. Well, if any designer see this post, congratulations. All the content is awesome, and is very nice to see all the "brainstorms" and the reject content.

But, some stuff in this book called my attention. There are a couple of creatures that didn't appeared in the Fallout 4 game yet, and, discussing with some friends, they said that those unseen monsters probably will appear in some DLC content, since they are too well finished and fits perfectly in some future DLC.

If the Bethesda staff don't mind, I'll post a couple of pictures of the book. The book has over 350+ pages, and I'll post just two and a half of them. Don't want to make illegal procedures but... hell, I'm basically making a free merchandise of the product. Just want to show some stuff in the forum. If it has to be removed, well, fell free to do it, but know that I'm not having bad intentions (and please don't ban me...). Really! I know that (at least, for my home country) that the maximum permitted sharing is 5% of the book, that would be a little bit more than 15 pages... so... I think it's OK.

So, there it goes.

Third image: you can read it...

Fourth image: Centaur

Noting that the Centaur previously existed in the Fallout world: http://www.writeups.org/img/inset/Centaur-Fallout-3-h1.jpg

Once really hideous, that thing got really creepier in Fallout 4. He will be back? If so, please Bethesda, do not put it in dark and/or small places...

Also, the Watcher Sparrow has a "digital-like" "MEEP". Something from the Institute?

What you guys think? Since the most of us are waiting for the creation kit and the DLCs, I think that may be a nice discussion.

PS: for those who have the book, I also call the attention for the Institute Power Armor, Mama Murphy early concepts, Piper early concepts and Waldo in page 177 hahaha

In any project development there is some ideas that doesn't go until the end. That's perfectly natural... principally in a video game that has a "new world", that needs to be created from the zero. There's lots of "mindstorms" that had to be done to achieve the final content. Also a lot of art from Synths, BoS armors and uniforms, and Mirelurks. Seems that the Mirelurk Queen had a lot of trouble to be created...

That first image also looks like it could have been a Power Armour'less jet pack system. Would love one of those (not a fan of Power Armour). Could be nice if Bethesda added a 'backpack' slot to the game, where you can fill with either a Jetpack or some kind of cool other item like a Grenade Pouch (halves weight of all grenades?).

Just an idea...

We do have the Rad Gulls. I've seen them roosting on the ledges of University Point.

If the paid DLC is filled with these cut contents, you pretty much just got EA-ed by BethEsdA.

Let's hope not.

Art of Fallout is available on Amazon and Bethesda store. You can try ebay too.

I haven't bought it

Some things get left on the cutting room floor. But DLC allows those ideas to be revisited.

As long as Bethesda keeps up the tradition of DLC as they have been and releasing their adventure Modules...I call them Modules, like adventure Modules from DnD...Then it all comes in a nice little package.

u always get some ideas from Concepts art that are better let for DLC, isnt the first time i find concepts from a art book a on DLC. That is normal on the process of development, cut content add to a DLC is when u find the INFO on the game already but isnt implement. Like the DLC of ME 3 day 1 about the Protos, that the info was on the game alreayd but under a DLC lock.

Concept art is just that concepts, alot of it never made it to the final game or is save for future times maybe. Normaly when they concepts artist finish the concepts of the game they star working on the DLC, and they probably sometimes reuse ideas from the original stuff.

Bethesda's games have more content than any other game out there ^^ you really can't use the 'EA' argument on them, no matter how much they've cut before releasing it

In every game cuts are normal. The book has also a LASER mounted weapon that would be used by the Minutemen, but was replaced by the Artillery Piece. They know what to do...

But the Deathclaw Mutant and the Centaur really got my attention. Maybe we will see them... maybe in a "ultra-contaminated" place, where the mutations got even further, creating those things.

Yes you can. If they've done it, end off they've commited to the same act. Bungie was once a very respected developer, then Destiny came along and people found entire playable areas with enemies and all in them which apparently became available through DLCs. Now Bungie has lost a LOT of respect (including my own, but for different reasons).

BTW, I'm not saying Bethesda are going to, as others have stated Concept Art doesnt mean that development time was given to actually model those designs and create functional animations, in fact I doubt they have, otherwise modders would have found data for these models in the game files.

You certainly did. Didn't know about the book, just ordered one so you earned them 30$ (was discounted :D).

I looked through that book in the store. It kills me how badass the art looks and how it got translated so badly into dinky looking armor.

Nah. In all of my databooks, I've never seen rejected concept arts turned into paid DLC.

Cut contents are approved idea which cut by director later on because of various reasons. One of the reason that can be considered a dike move is to sell them separately as 'missing puzzle pieces'.

Plus, you know it's wrong when concept artists reuse director's rejected concepts to be put in a new concepts. You know that's not how concept art works like; it's not just "aha just use previous rejected stuff and put it in the new DLC, our director will definitely approve because the rejected stuff will definitely fits in the new idea"
