We love to romantisize old things, including the inaccurate sound reproductions of vinyl/old anolog equipment. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with appreciating the way it sounds, it's subjective like all the other arts. But it's not like there's some universal truth that everything sounds better on vinyl.
True, but some vinyl pressings sound waaaay better than their CD counterparts. And vice versa, of course.
One advantage of collecting vinyl is it suffers from the least depreciation in monetary value (generally speaking), and can even grow if it's something collectable, which can't be said for mp3 files. I like vinyl, and there's something about it that makes an album that you love all the more special when owned on LP, but it isn't very convenient at all.
Anyone buy 78s? Ever since playing Fallout 3, I keep my eyes peeled for 78s from the Andrews Sisters and the Ink Spots, among others. I'm saving up for a big old steam-punk looking gramophone, to go with my wingback chair and drinks cabinet that sit in the corner of my
billiards room imagination (sigh)
