Does anyone else find Navmeshing oddly...

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 12:43 am

Soothing? I mean, It's tedious, its reptitive... but honestly for some reason after finishing a large chunk of dungeon I am working on, going in and hand meshing practically everything, I can't help but feel a little sad that I am done...

Or maybe I am just nuts.

You're nuts.

Seriously though, it is sad to finish a project. For me, its far more satisfying though.

I do find it repititive and soothing, but I also find it very gratifying when I'm finished.

When I'm working on navmeshes, it's because the vanilla road is causing a pathfinding problem for my carriage, so I'm there to "fix a problem". Sometimes it's actually really hard to figure out what is causing the problem so I've learned a few tricks dealing with navmeshes - like finding overlapping triangles, triangles that don't actually connect along a vertice effectively cutting through a road, vertices way below the ground, etc.

I somewhat agree, until you get to world spaces and doing them from scratch. Dungeons are completely fine though, just might take forever.

The ONLY thing I find soothing about navmeshing is that it's finally finished. And it seems to me it's a little more tedious in the CK than it was in the GECK, especially if you're navmeshing a multi level structure. However, the coolness of finally watching your actors follow your carefully crafted package makes the tedium a necessary step.

I didn't expect you to be so positive ;)

Yeah, I have a feeling that if you found Balok in real life and whispered "Navmesh. Helgen." in his ear, you'd get the sort of reaction that leads the survivors, hundreds of years later, to say things like "And here is the hole where once stood the great city of Wah-shing-tun."

Yes.

Just finished my first few navmeshes earlier today, after dreading the process a little due to a general impression of "uh oh, navmeshing!" around the community.

Found it super-simple and quite soothing, at least for the small interior cells I was working on. I've a fairly strong grasp of topology and high-poly modeling in 3ds Max, though, so laying out triangles with verts was like falling off a log for me. Were I a beginner modder or lacking any 3D experience, it might be a very different story.

[That said, as a random aside: I'm not sure what to do about my exterior dungeon entrance, which is in a location with no vanilla navmesh - ie, a hard-to-reach NPCs-are-too-dumb-to-get-there place. Short of some kind of clunky companion teleporting script solution. I'm not sure how Beth handled such areas, because I don't play with NPC followers much.]

At times when I was NavMeshing a lot, mainly for FOOK, I actually did enjoy it, although I was equally frustrated at times. Anyone else start to see triangles on the ground (IRL) everywhere when frequently NavMeshing?

YES.
Especially at doorways, and turning corridors.

And the dreams.... Triangles everywhere and NPCs stuck, doing the hand on hip, running in place, standing there looking dumb, thing.

Now I want a green'ish blue triangle rugs for my patio/front door, then my guests can assuredly follow me in/out.

I did my first navmesh a couple of days ago and I was just glad to get it over with, apart from it's not over with because my follower hesitates and shuffles at one of my interior doorways, so I obviously didn't do a great job of it!

I keep telling myself that it's a great learning experience!

My thoughts exactly. I was expecting my first navmesh would be a nightmare, but it was actually kind of fun and sort of felt like a "break from all the hard work", even though the cell was huge. Also, I had spent dozens of hours on cluttering before the navmesh, so it was relieving to be doing something else.

yes, as long as it doesn't take _too_ long, four or five exterior cells with lots of trees and stuff and it's done with soothing...
remember that vintage arcade game 'qix' maybe...? kind of reminds me. except for there's no roaming sticks :-)

Or maybe I am just nuts.
those two wouldn't necessarily exclude eachother ;-)
