Does a payment model Make the success of a mmo?

Post » Thu Aug 29, 2013 4:12 pm

Okay I have been noticing that, People say yes it was going to fail because of the payment model, I don't Think so. I think this just because you have to pay monthly fee doesn't mean it will fail, if it has enough content
And Great customer service,Like they have advertising. If it has enough for you to do and keeps updating again constantly. I've see this working as a paid to play MMO, but it does not have that it won't work As a Pay to play model.

I will like to have your opinion on this
And how do you think ESO will do in the long term?

ESO will make a ton of money and be largely successful at pulling in crowds of people at launch. The problem is when you pass the $250 million development mark it's not enough to be "successful" as you have to be "VERY SUCCESSFUL" to make that kind of money back. SWTOR has had the largest initial development cost of any MMO released at $200 million and pulled in millions of players at launch. So SWTOR was very successful then right? Sort of. Even with their massive marketing campaign pulling in incredible numbers SWTOR's development costs were so colossal that many people don't consider the game a success.

Regardless of payment model ESO is going to make a LOT of money and have a LOT of players at launch. Does this make ESO successful to you though?

I think it is complicated. Will the payment model automatically mean it will fail? No, not all by itself. But, with it being P2P, it has to be better than the competition out there that doesn't charge a monthly fee. So even if it is a great game, but there is another great game(s) that doesn't have a subscription fee, people would be more inclined to play the non subscription game(s) that is just as good. For me personally, ESO will have to beat GW2, and since it does have P2P model, I will not buy the game on day 1 as I originally planned if it was a B2P game. I will wait for player feedback, and more than likely wait for a free trial. When I get to play it, if it does not beat GW2 in enjoyment factor that would make $15 worth it, I will not subscribe, but if it does, I will subscribe and still play both games. If the game was B2P, then it would be likely I would have bought it on day 1, and played both ESO and GW2, spending money on both games, even if ESO is just as good as GW2 or even just a little bit not as good as GW2, but with the P2P model, it has to be GW2. So right now, ESO went from it needs to be good for me to play and spend money, to needing to be better than another game to get me to spend $15 a month on it.

In short, with a P2P model, it is more dependent on the quality of the game and the quality/quantity of new content, where as with B2P people are more likely to be little more tolerant with the game since they do not have to pay $15 a month to play it, or even to come back and try the game to see if anything has changed since they left,

Starting off as a subscription and going F2P within the first year of an MMO's life is considered a failure by most standards, and sadly I do not see ESO being successful enough to maintain a subscription for the majority of players who try it.

I believe (know) that ESO, with P2P, will eventually fail, as most P2P games do. While it may not really "fail" in many people's eyes, it will eventually go B2P or F2P.

Ive not seen anything like that.. WOW still has millions of players and is sub. SWTOR and Rift are pure free, what didnt help them much, you could imagine if F2P was viable option, Rift and SWTOR should have added 100+ servers more, right. WoW is still the king, thats basically it. Worst thing is probably Blizzard's Titan become next one, and Blizzard becomes even bigger threat to whole game industry.

No.It is the game itself that needs to be entertaining to keep people hooked.
If they really give people worth money for their subscription in gametime and content they will be very successful.
I however believe that with a fixed monthly price occasional players are disadvantaged compared to players that play each and all day ;
if occasional players have to pay but don't get worth money's gametime they will get upset in the end and halt or stop their subscription all together
Not that subscription is a model that will automatically fail.It is a model with so much potential but it needs polishing in order to maintain its succes I believe.
Both making the game more accessable with more payment options,and assuring that every group of players get worth their gametime
