Does the beginning of Skyrim bother you?

Post » Tue Aug 07, 2012 4:02 am

I'm not thinking about the long and tedious intro, but the start of the characters life. I feel it staples you into a certain RP. Not to mention the somewhat overpowering gear you get in the very start. You can get a hold of heavy imperial officer's outfit or light imperial armor, or stormcloak armor right in the start and imperial blades that are on par with steel. Myself I don't like the kind of hand holding I was subject to at the very beginning at the game. I would have preferred an option to escape Helgen completely on my own, or killed Ralof or Hadvar at the very start. I honestly think coming out of the cave from Helgen would be a lot more interesting if I was still clothed in prisoners clothes and hadn't attained any weapons.

Agree or disagree and why?

Edit: Uh... I made a knee jerk reaction. Nothing to say that isn't that reaction to how long it is, sorry...

Both agree and disagree.I disagree that the gear is OP maybe if your on an easier difficulty and playing without mods and I agree it does staple you into a certain RP,but thats what mods are for.

It still took me less time than Oblivion's intro. It's alright, I guess, if not a bit long, and the gear isn't that overpowered, nor does one have to pick it up.

It was cool the first time, and then became a chore.

I roleplay so it's different with each character. Most of my characters don't take all the stuff in Helgen. Or they take it and sell it. Some of them leave all of it behind. Since it's my character's choice to take things or leave things behind I don't blame the game if my character takes something.

But I do agree with you point about leaving Helgen without Ralof or Hadvar. That would have been nice. My favorite beginning was Morrowind's. I prefer that game's minimalist approach to the longer and more linear beginnings of the later games (I include Fallout 3 in this).

I did not think the gear you get is overpowered. The stats on the SC or Legion armor is nothing extraodinary. Neither are the legion swords or SC battleaxes. You can get the equivalent as soon as you step out into the world and fight your first bandits.

I do find it tedius after a while to sit through all of the cinematics. It if four and a half minutes until you can even get to the character creation, then more time spent before you ever get to even move your character. Adding in a check point at the exit of the Helgen cave where you could save and go back to change anything you wanted in your character would have been nice. They did that in Oblivion and FO3, and it was a great way to avoid doing the tutorial for every character, since you could always start your new characters from a save at that point, change what you want, and get going.

Also, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9557 is a lifesaver. I think it's a must for PC. Very fun RP options.

it annoys me that there is no opportunity to change the character futures at the end of the intro like in Oblivion.

It took me a long time to make a character that didn't follow the dragon born, civil war quest lines. Now when I make a new character I have to force myself to forget that whole first ten minutes of game play. But it would have been nice to have multiple starting points in the game. Two where you start in helgan keep after choosing who you follow and one in every keep in skyrim. I think that would help RPers.

Well I can't argue that the gear is OP honestly. But it is OP in comparison to going out of the cave with prisoners rags and your fists. It feels like I wasn't ready for that so early on, it's like bethesda just went like "oh here, have a free full suit of armor of your choice with any kind of weapon type you want"
I would have preferred if the cave had more skeevers and little spiders. I feel that encountering a bear and gigantic spiders came on a bit to fast.
Also I can't stress enough how much I'd like the option to kill Ralof and/or Hadvar in the beginning of the game.

But in FO3 you had a save right as you left the vault that let you change any stats that you wanted and started you out with a while new life.

I didn't like it because it was much longer than it had to be. I don't think calling it hand-holding is accurate just because it gives you some starter weapons/armor. I don't really want to start out with my fists killing rats or something tedious like that.

I'll take a beginning that's just character creation, and then drops you right into the port of a major town/city and lets you approach the main quest of your own accord.

Sure the creatures are common in Skyrim, but is it really common for a completely inexperienced character to slay a pair of gigantic spiders and a bear. The start of Skyrim just feels like such a huge magnificent coincidence right from the start, I can't help but to feel like some unknown force is helping me. Never in a million years would I be so lucky in real life.

Skyrim isnt real life! Its made to escape from real life and be someone diffrent and this is a diffrent world where giant spiders are really common and so are bears and they are both not that tough.

It isn't just starter weapons/armor. It's any armor type you could wish for as well as any variety of weapon type you could possibly get at that point in the game. It's comparable to getting a spell in every school of magic right from the start.

Probably wouldn't be slaying dragons in real life....

And what overpowered gear, the first thing I did when I entered my first bandit cave is to switch equipment because everything I found there was better...
