Don't know how to start with Dawnguard.

Just bough and downloaded DG from Steam and was thinking on making a new character for the expansion, but I have run myself into a wall as I can't make my character.
So any ideas on fun build who fits a vampire/hunter?

The game will not allow you to build a character, or you are stumped on how to build the best character?

I downloaded DG last night, I still have to update SKSE before I can play but I too have been thinking of rerolling my char and downloading the alternate start mod myself. Like you though, I'm not so sure what build to do. The first one I made I just kind of picked whatever.

One of the alternate start options is for a Vigilant of Stendarr (though I'm not sure if there are compatibility issues). I asked a similar question yesterday and they said:

Paladin/Cleric - Good character, for the Dawnguard
Assassin/Thief/Mage - for the naughty side

And, of course, you could mix things up. A heroic Paladin who's wooed to the darkside and develops a lust for power, or whatever. IMO, the important thing is to imagine a character concept and try to stick to it through the game. But I also like to choose a character type that will fit the story, at least for the first playthrough.

I can build new characters, but it's what class I should make my character. I don't want the "best", I want fun :bunny:

I don't wanna "ruin" my game with people made mods

It's like when you was in school and didn't know what to write at a test. Just this is what to make for Dawnguard I'm blocked at.

The Vigilant of Stendarr wasn't a bad idea, maybe I take a closer look on such build.

I downloaded the Alternate start mod last night but didn't reroll my char. I was too excited to start playing Dawnguard that I just continued on with my current character whom is now turning into a bit of a tank.

Who do you think designed the game, a group of chimpanzees? Honestly though, there is nothing wrong with fan made mods, but you do have to watch what you download, because some of them can ruin your experience. Those are the kinds of mods you just pass on, there are lots of other, better made and more lore friendly mods you can use that won't ruin your game.

My Altmer mage is a power hungry, Thalmor supporter who is also an Illusion and conjuration expert. Dawnguard is actually a perfect fit for him. I had been considering becoming a vampire for this build for some time, but I refused to allow some generic random npc infect me. That's all been taken care of now with this dlc, now he's on his way to unlimited power.

Some non-spoiler info that may help you decide:

- Light Armor has three variants for the Danwguard side. All Volkihar gear is Light Armor as well.
- Heavy Armor has two variants for the Dawnguard.
- Dawnguard melee weapons are 2-Handed Hammers and 1-Handed War Axes.
- Dawnguard bows are Crossbows.
- Dawnguard shields are nice and their unique shield is classed as Light Armor.
- Found artifacts and other specialty gear varies from Light to Heavy, both in armors and weapons.

With the above info in mind, my preferences for a vampire hunter are
Sneak
Light Armour
Archery
1-Handed War Axes
Torches for blocking instead of a shield, but only equip it when entering melee

Yes, I said torches.
Bashing with the torch sets your opponents on fire. Fire is useful against all enemies and highly effective against the undead.

Happy hunting
Hope that helps

I did that, and turned him into a Death Knight
