so I keep getting redirected to this page at random http://i.imgur.com/AFYDKfa.png (screen shot so people don't actually download)

I have been highly skeptical of it since I first started seeing it today I decided to check what version Java actually is on and its on update 45

and before downloading that I checked which verson I am on http://i.imgur.com/0rfZZRs.png

who do you contact about malware being spammed about the net / can real Java do anything about this ?

the fact that you're being redirected to that page means you already have a virus on your computer.

On the bright side, http://xkcd.com/350/.

It could just be the remnants of a virus that was already removed in a previous scan. Removal of a virus doesn't remove the damage to the system. Your DNS servers could have been changed, your DNS cache could have been corrupted, etc.

Randomly being redirected to a suspicious page (java never randomly redirects you prior to installation, only post-install to congratulate you on a successful update) is not a symptom of a healthy computer.

Root Kit, or something similar. Great fun to get rid of. Sophos has a scanner for them though, that works extremely well. (and its free.)

My guess is it's a kit of miscellaneous roots from trees and plants for your cooking pleasure.

Ohh, Rootkits are fun. I had one that took me a month to get my old laptop running again.

What I did was boot up Linux off a USB flash drive and run vidrus scanners in it. That removed the infection, but not the damaged boot files. From there I had to download some other programs that repaired the boot files (I tried copying them from another windows PC I had, but Linux would crash on me when I tried doing to much since that laptop was a frickin toaster with only 200 odd MB of ram)
