Does "Wait 72 hours" method still work?

If the gaurds are trying to kill you, you did a little more than steal.

You "should" be able to surrender to a guard and pay the fine or serve the time. Just sheathe your weapons/spells and run up to a city/town guard and talk to them.

Reloading to a time before you ticked off a city might help.

I sneaked, and assassinated a chicken in Riverwood. Everyone ran out of their houses and tried to kill me.. I think Faendar dobbed me in, he was my companion, but he tried to kill me instead after "the Chicken Assassination".

It was a bit messed up, I didn't even raise my weaponry, desperately trying to yield.. but they didn't care.

I think it was their holy chicken... akin to killing the pope given the religious fervour even well to do ladies would try to stab me to death over it.

Sense of proportion required on bounties I think. I had to reload.

Not necessarily. I stole an item (got caught) for a quest and immediately talked to someone to complete the quest and a guard ran in to talk to me and since I was already in the conversation it treated me as if I had tabbed out of his arrest conversation or had resisted arrest. They attacked me and would not accept sheathing weaponry to surrender and I had to load an older save.

Forced conversations seem buggy in Skyrim. Such as the random quests where people run up and talk to you in the wilderness.. when you happen to be fighting snow bears/ frost trolls etc.

stash all your stolen goods then walk into town unarmed and try to talk to a guard, they should give the option to pay your fine....If its in whiterun and you got that far, you can yell at the guard saying your the jarls thane

Killing a chicken only gives you what? 45 bounty? 40 for the assault and 5 for the chicken value.

I got 6 months for killing a chicken, I'm a cold blooded killer I know <_<

If they killing you try putting your weapon away so you can pay the fine.

I stole from Alvor in Riverwood. Took all his metal ingots. I did it on the dl too. I made it as far as Dawnstar and never realized I was being pursued. His hitmen must've hid whenever I went to do something. I was finally confronted exiting the Temple in Dawnstar and a huge battle ensued as I tried to defend myself. I killed everyone involved. Including, I think my companion at the time. I felt bad. Contemplated carrying her body to the shrine nearby to lay her to rest. But then I decided I wanted her gear more. So, I just left her nekkid body laying in the snow at the bottom of the stairs.

I'm not very nice. First I kick her ass in the bar in Whiterun then I ask her to come with me on an adventure. Then, I get her killed and leave her body in the snow.
