John Carmack got up in front of everyone and said something like, "Doom means two things: demons and shotguns.
As long as this sort of thinking prevails, I'll be inline for Doom 4 when it's released.
It's unfortunate that 3 years of work went into it before it was decided that the game be scrapped ( and to think I could be playing Doom 4 right now! ) but I think it's kind of important to remember that up until Rage/ Doom 4 development Id have been a comparatively small studio which expanded rapidly to work on two big projects at the same time as major engine work.
The Call of Duty clone comments are probably a little strong, Call of Duty/Modern military shooters were doing lots of interesting things just a few years ago, so it's not really surprising that some elements crept in to the Doom philosophy. Scripted events are a great way of really showcasing impressive tech, more so than what's normally possible in general gameplay. The problems start showing when they're abused during gameplay, control is taken from the player and you're forced to watch them, then they just become yet another section of forced exposition that's mildly interesting the first time you see it and from then on it's just a forced delay in the gameplay.
The news on the atmosphere in the studio is disheartening though, I can barely imagine what it would be like to have 3 years of your work essentially binned, especially considering a lot of the team were new starts from what I gather. I hope things start getting better soon for all the guys and girls in the land of Id, I remember when developing a game was supposed to be a fun job.
