Doom3 BFG edition PC is inferior to Doom3 Pc from 2004...

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:22 pm

Hello everybody. I just wanted to say that I refuse to have my intelligence insulted and be called blind to my face, even though I have enough experience with 3d engines and with doom3 in particular.
The new doom3 bfg edition has a huge HUGE problem with texture compression and lighting that's being used to such an extent that textures look pixelated and filled with compression artifacts while at the same time the lighting is set up to destroy the dark ambient of doom3 and it's particles and bumpmaps due to being too [censored] bright...
It's like gama got turned up by 30 or 40%

Here's a quick comparison between default doom3 on pc with max settings and doom3 bfg edition on pc with it's proposed max settings

2012 Doom3 Bfg pc max settings with no mods(there's no option to change texture settings nor add mods to this one...)

Id software has just managed to gratuitously add some more wood to the Rage fire that it has created some months ago, BRAVO!
It seems that id is not even capable to re-release one of it's own hit games from 2004 without turning it to ashes so sad...
And you want us to expect that Doom4 will not be an even bigger failure than Rage and this Doom3 re-release were?
Get your act together id because you have crossed the point of no return it seems and you are nearly completey submerged under the quick sand that's been rapidly swallowing you lately...
Cheers and if you own Doom3 on pc since 2004, do yourslef a favor and don't buy this BFJ edition (J as in Joke)

Yep, it's surprising that they actually made it look worse in those comparisons you've shown.

Now this is completely off-topic but I couldn't help but point out that I see a robot in those screenshots. Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: If that ain't a robot I don't know what is?

That's actually not too far from the truth, in a more "figurative" manner.

Lmfao... I would not have seen that unless you gave the image, but I see it now...

Oh and thanks for the screenshots, wazups2x, that just goes to show how it really does look worse with the brighter lights.

On steam, would you rather buy the doom pack complete for $35, or Doom 3 bfg edition for $30?

I'm going to tell you what one has that the other doesn't.

Doom 3 BFG edition has the lost missions, and no rest for the living for doom 2, and is cheaper by $5.

Doom pack complete has more customizable graphics and mod support for doom 3, Final Doom, Master Levels for doom 2, and a workaround to get classic doom multiplayer working without the need for third party source ports.

I'd say the BFG edition is inferior, and is only for PS3 people, for Doom ,Doom 2, and Doom 3, and the 360 players should only get this for the Doom 3 part, as the XBLA versions of doom and doom 2, while the same, is still superior because it has the SS guards for the doom 2 secret levels. I don't own the 360 version of the BFG edition, but I'm guessing that they also neutered the Doom 2 secret levels.

There's also no excuse for no multiplayer for the classic dooms in the PC version. Even the steam versions doesn't have the required files to play multiplayer. Heretic and Hexen has them, but Doom and Doom 2 doesn't? It doesn't make any sense. I think that for the steam version of Doom and Doom 2, a patch is needed to be created so that the doom directories have these following files.

DM.cfg
DM.doc
DM.exe (this is the 1.5 version)
DM.dat
SETUP.exe
SERSETUP.exe
IPXSETUP.exe
MODEM.cfg
MODEM.num
MODEM.str

The killer here is that it doesn't have SETUP.exe, where you can reconfigure the keys and also change the music from soundblaster to midi.

As for the BFG edition, a front end needs to be made and a multiplayer option added to the main menu, in which case, when selected, exits the game, and loads up the front end, in which you choose your settings for a multiplayer match, sort of what DM.exe and Doom 95 did. Back then, there was no internet play for doom, so at least make this similar and be lan only. Heck, they could use the same style that doom 95 uses for all I care, and by style I mean menu structures, and not really doom 95 itself.

You are forgetting about the Doom 2 secret levels being neutered to the max to contain no Third Reich material, not even the SS soldier enemies. The levels were renamed IDKFA and Keen and they use standard Doom2 music tunes, MAP31 using MAP05's but don't know what 32 is using.

I am deeply ashamed Id has gone this low, and this comes from a veteran long-time (16-17yrs) player and mapper.
