Dovahkiin

I think that he is trapped somewhere, or that you need to find who he is. I don't want to play as him, because he is a human male, and I want to try other races

That would svck... We wouldn't be able to choose our own race.
Did you ever play TES III: Morrowind? The Nerevar was a Chimer, the light-skinned people before the Dunmer, or dark elves. You, the player, play as the Nerevarine, a reincarnation of the Chimer-hero, Lord Nerevar. You, the player, get to choose what person serves as Lord Nerevar's avatar. Whether it's a Dunmer or an Argonian.

I'm pretty sure Bethesda realized "oh, people didn't really like the whole 'help out the guy to save the world so you're no longer the hero' deal, and just went back to good ole' reincarnation.

My two guesses:

1) The player will be Dovakhiin and, therefore, Dovakhiin will be some sort of mythical figure, someone who could be portrayed by any of the races, male or female.

2) Dovakhiin will actually be the main enemy in the game and the player will... er... help the dragons to defeat it.

Hehe, I think that number 1 is the most probable.

Or would it be the player himself? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since Dovahkiin is obviously male and with a mustache (as seen carved in the rock in the trailer), and Bethesda wouldn't take all the playable races and the other gender away. Or is the player going to be Dovahkiin reborn, a reincarnation, similar to how things went in Morrowind?

I think it's a reborn scenario. Bethesda must have learned from Oblivion that playing postman is no fun, and that carving, when coupled with the narration, suggests that the events from the rock are happening again.

Although it's questionable how you would go about fighting dragons...

I hope it is the main character, the person doesn't necessarily has to look like that, its just how they are depicted

I hope so too. Perhaps the "Dovahkiin" is a title instead of a name? Sort of like how people refer to you as the Nerevarine in Morrowind but you have your own name as well.

Wasn't the Nevarine supposed to be Dunmer?

Who told you that?!
The only thing we know for sure was that the Nerevarine was the reincarnation of the 1E General Lord Nerevar.

You know what would be cool? If it turned out, after helping/resurrecting/summoning that Dovahkiin guy, it turned out that he's actually the evil one and the dragons where just trying to save Tamriel by destroying Skyrim, a necessary sacrifice. What a TWEEEEST.

I should become a script writer, I know.

I'm all for the Dovahkiin Incarnate idea thing. It worked well in Morrowind, and I doubt it'll suddenly stop working.

Besides, the stone-carved Dovahkiin (if Dovahkiin is the player) could just be the "trailer" version of the player. Doesn't almost every single game with customizable characters have a specific player character featured in the trailer? Look at the recent BioWare RPGs, for example.

I would not mind a reincarnation story like Morrowind, but I think they could do something cooler than that.

For all we know the trailer was literal, and we have to first find the stone wall he is in, then find a way to free him or something. I also like the idea someone mentioned where he is the king and you have to find a way to save him/ make him stronger, but he dies and you get all his awesome powers.....

Mostly, it doesn't really matter in the end. No matter who you are, your character never gets due credit for all the incredible stuff they do.

I hope he isn't like Martin. Maybe the cave carving is just a prophecy, and the Nords made him look like a Nord because they are nords themselves. Like the deal with the Neravarine in MW, you could be any race you wanted, but being a non dunmer/elf would raise some eyebrows.

Just another Nevevar... Nerever... another one of those prophecy guys.

I think that Dovahkiin could be similar to the Nerevarine. Might have been male and of a certain race once before in history, but that doesn't mean this time round she won't be a Wood Elf with murderous tendencies or a Khajiit with whiskers and an awesome tail.

Then again, Dragon-born seems to be linked to the Septim family, from Tiber to Martin. So this could easily be the New Hope for the Empire. ;)

IMO, Bethesda wouldn't re-use the "Incarnate" and "Sidekick" stories again (well hopefully they don't use the Sidekick), so maybe Dovahkiin is more of a title than a name, one that perhaps you get to take up.

And then John was a Dovahkiin.

Perhaps Dovahkiin is actually a dragon depicted in its human form. A dragon that you ride to destroy the enemy at the end of the main quest. Probably not though.

I'm hoping that the Dovahkiin is a prophetic character who's long gone, or otherwise will primarily be a background element of the plot. I don't really want him to be another Martin-esque unlikely hero that you have to follow around. Being the incarnate of him might be interesting if it's well-executed, but I honestly want to see Bethesda do something new.

I like both of these ideas , I sure hope it is among these two fellows opinions.

I agree that an "incarnate" type of plot device would be more welcome than a "help the important NPC" one, by far; I loved the sense of mythology and unrealised power that Morrowind's main quest gave the player character. Not to mention some of the opportunities it resulted in (godslaying, angering factions, etc), and that the PC's eventual physical/magical prowess always felt a lot more justified in Morrowind than Oblivion, as a result.

But even if they do re-use that concept, I'm sure there'll be differences and plot twists.

Yes, he looks male, but he doesn't necessarily have a moustache. We've been over this before.

Okay, so either he is a male with a moustache, or it's a female with flames that look like a moustache shooting out her nose.

I am almost positive that you get to play as him. It would make no sense to end the trailer like that if he was not the main character. If he is not then how would you be able to kill a dragon? Dovahkiin is the main character I am sure of it.

I think Dovahkiin means Dragon born, so you probably take the role of a dragon born. In the picture on the teaser site he is HUGE so im assuming its just symbolism; you'll take the role

To be honest, I really don't care too much about dovakiin right now. I'm mostly looking forward to seeing what they've made of Skyrim, if it is gonna be all snow, if it's gonna be bigger or smaller than Oblivion, what they've done with the system, what weapons are back, what skills are back, if the races have changed.

This a come up a few times in this thread, so I figure I'll just throw this out there:

The player could be the Dovahkiin, without needing to be the reincarnation of an ancient hero. The Dovahkiin could simply be a hero that was prophesied to appear to combat the dragons, and which the Nords portrayed as a male Nord Warrior, because that's what comes to the typical Nord's mind when they picture a "prophesied hero".

I was not aware that there was an original Dovahkiin?!

If he is a reincarnation of anything it would be Tiber Septim, who was also Dragon Born right?

Thats what I think it is. It was obviously a prophesied event carved into the stone. As for the name, that is not his real name, just like the Nerevarine. Dovahkiin is "dragon" for Dragon Born.
