First time on that site so sorry if this sounds dumb, but how do you download mods from Moddb? I mean, I've been looking around the page and there doesn't seem to be any download option at all! Steam is ultra easy, Nexus is almost as easy, but this site has me stumped.

You need to register first. then when you click the download button it will take you to a site called filefront where it's hosted

Is there really anything on ModDB Skyrim related that's not on Nexus? The only thing I watched ModDB for was MERP and since the Warner Bros scum have scuppered that project I rarely go to that site.

But to answer your question, on whatever mods page you are looking at, you should see a set of tabs at the top, click on the downloads tab and away you go.
