Dragon Quest series discussion

Post » Wed May 22, 2013 7:29 am

Dragon Quest games are a lot of fun IMO. I have actually only played the third one, GBC version, named Dragon Warrior III.

Can anyone recommend other installations in the series? Are the newer games just as fun? How do they compare to III?

Also, just discuss the Dragon Quest series in general.

Dragon Quest 8 is amazing, certainly worth playing. The only other one I've played in DQ2, but it was all in Japanese so I didn't really get much out if it. :P

But even on its own DQ8 is a standout game. I like the story, the British localised characters were brilliant, and there was just so much to do and see. Especially liked collecting teams for the monster arena.

I haven't played this series like I should. I really don't have any DQ (Dragon Quest, not Dairy Queen) games.

I have a PS1, PS2, Gamecube, 3DS and a PS3. Which game should I start with?

I think PSX games are compatible with PS1. Is the PSX one Dragon Quest VIII or something?

VIII for the PS2. It'll leave a lasting impression you'll never forget. It was a privilege and an honor to play it and for that I'll always be thankful.

Oh. I just call it a PS1. The fancy X throws me off.

Since DQ is made by Square Enix (well, back then Enix), I'm assuming it's good. I'll do a search on eBay for something cheap. Wish me luck, I'll need it. :)

Never got into DQ7 for PS1 myself. My favorites are DQ4 (DS), DQ5 (DS) and DQ8 (PS2).

Dragon quest 4 is the best game in the series, and I've played all but the 7th. 8 is close, and 3 was pretty damn good as well, but 4 is by far the best imo. Now, if you want to give games outside of the series but still bearing the DQ name, I'd highly recommend both Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, and DQM:J2 as well. A ton of freaking fun, you can literally spend hundreds of hours trying to breed the strongest monsters in the game. I'm about 20-30 hours out(only because I insist on leveling each breeding monster to about 50-60) from breeding the Ultimate Monster in DQM:J2. Unfortunately you can't do that in the first, it requires monsters given away at events to breed the strongest ones :-(.

Has anyone played 3? Are any of the games resembling that game?

Hmm, it's been a while, isn't 3 the one where your party mates are the kind that you level in classes, and you can switch their classes? If so, I think 9 is kind of like that iirc, it's been a while though, so I can't say with any certainty, but I do recall another one having a system like that.
