Dragonborn - no big deal?

Post » Wed Nov 21, 2012 8:43 am

In Dawnguard, no one seem to care or notice that you basically is a poverful dragonspirit in a mortal (but very powerful, at least if you have levelled a lot) body.

Would it not have been so much better if this actually was a big deal if you have been confirmed as Dragonborn by the Greybeards?

I mean, the Dawnguard and the vampires would know that you are not someone to be crossed or threatened. Even Isran and Harkon should be me smart enough to be respectful and tread carefully around the Dragonborn as Dovahkiin is not someone you want as your enemy.

Thoughts?

They're both fanatics in their own ways, one doesn't get out much, and the other one is just an ungrateful *sshole (just ask his 'friends')...so they won't care.

Its just that one would think they would be grateful to have the support of the Dragonborn on their side, and know better then to threaten him/her.

Look, my post-main-campaign dragonborn male nord was escorting Serana to her ancestral home, because she had been respectful, nice and all that despite being a vampire, so I figured, why not, if a vampire is not aggressive, or evil, live and let live (if some idiot highwaymen attacks her, which they always do, she can drink them, no problem, its the ones who attack people that are the main problem). But her daddy obviously had no clue who I was and threatened me when I respectfully declined his pompous and il-suited offer. When he said I was pray, I was like thinking, with that chant echoing in my mind: What are you rambling about you delusional old fool. Having been cooked up in this castle for too long have we? Next time we meet you either have a change of heart or I will turn you into a pool of gore. And that is also what happened in the finale, I tore through the vampire lines like a tornado leaving sacks of sliced, diced, crushed, twisted and burnt undead meat in my wake. He never stood a chance.

The only person who does recognize you as dragonborn is durnehviir.

Harkon and Serana come from a time when Dragonborns were a common sight possibly, seeing as they don't care for the dragons either?

Would have been cool if Harkon did acknowledge you were the last of the Dragonborns (supposedly) though and used that to coax you into letting him make you immortal so you'll always be able to protect Tamriel only price is you must drink the blood of those you protect. =D

Rather than the "BE A VAMPIRE OR DIE" choice he gives.

A lot of Good characters would have been conflicted if given that choice rather than outright saying no as they do normally.

I am not aware of the Dragonborn ever being a common sight. From what I remember the greybeard say, its rare with more then one appearing per Era (Save for the Septim blood-line, if They where all "true" dragon born, and not just had the blood lineage, but I doubt you inherit soul type of a dragonborn parent, or at least not from a single ancestor).

Anyway, I think we all agree with the notion that your character being Dragonborn should have been a big deal and that either faction would have welcomed such a rare and powrful ally who would one day lead their people into a new promised future.

I agree that a good charcter can be tempted to become a vampire, even become one, for the greater good. Using Molag-Bals gift against his own wishes. I doubt Molag bal can do much spiritual damage to the Dragon born anyway.

The Dragonborn were not a common sight in Harkons time.
Harkon and Isran are both fanatical in their own ways and so will not recognise the power the Dragonborn has. In their eyes Harkon is all powerful and god like and Isran is a rightious crusader that you either stand with him or against him. No middle ground with either. So you fall in line or get pushed aside.

Good thoughts, and not unreasonable!
But the DLC needs to work for everyone - whether Level 10 or Level 68 like me.
It's concievable someone might play the DLC before completing the main quest in Skyrim...
Before doing much of anything in Skyrim, actually (as unlikely as that may seem).
Remember: the Dovahkiin didn't even know he was Dragonborn, back at the beginning of the game.
I just pounded Harkon with (an assortment of) shouts, heheh...
That got his attention for sure. Vampires don't like fire.
(Isran I thought was very well done - very malevolent, and menacing.)
But I guess the bottom line is, being Dragonborn is really important only to... dragons.

So you can eat a dragons soul and gain a very small measure of it's power. good for you. now join up or get out. thats the faction quest attitude for DG in a nutshell. Being the ultimate dragon slayer has jack all to do with killing/being a vampire.

In Harkan's veiw he's offering you the most wonderful gift in all creation. A gift that he sacrificed thousands of souls and let Molag Bal molest his wife and daughter to aquire. And you're getting it for FREE. So yeah, he's a bit cheesed off if you tell him no.

As for Isran.. he's a sleep deprived psycho vamp hunter. All he cares about is that you're willing and able to kill vampires at any cost and follow his orders while doing it. If you can't, you've no business being inside his fort.

Last, you could extend the concept of the original post to the whole rest of the game. Do you know how badly i wanted to gut Vilkas after I'd stoped the civil war, killed Alduin and saved the whole freaking province of Skyrim and he says he's never even heard of me when i'm asking to join the Companions? Fek, you can't even get respect from the freaking town guards past the first few bits of the MQ

I'm fine with the dragonborn status being mostly ignored because the majority of my PCs don't want to flaunt it. I'm surprised that neither Serana or her mother remark on it after the fight with Durnehviir though.

Good I don't want NPC's saying that I'm Dragonborn when my character clearly isn't (Hasn't started the main quest and never will).

They are so occupied with taking each other out, I don't think they care. It's not as if anyone in TG, DB or Companions recognized you as a dragonborn. They ae too preoccupied with self importance and business of their own faction.

Harkon did know you are dragonborn at one point in a dialogue choice he even says to you "This dragon has fangs" But him being a very powerful full blooded vampire he thought he was more powerful then the dragonborn. He was no mundane vampire he was chosen by molag bal in some way as you were chosen by talos.Thats the way I looked at it.two champions of different gods fighting it out.

I am always surprised at the sheer number of people who know that you are the Dragonborn and still try to kill you. I mean, imagine if they succeeded. Sure, they would be happy for a while, right until they remembered that you were the only one who could stop the world from being eaten by a terrifying dragon. I imagine they'd live what little time they had left kicking themselves over and over again.

Harkon comments "This dragon has teeth" in the smack talk before the final battle, IIRC.
