Dropped Weapons.

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 3:57 am

I have had a ton of thief and assassin attacks as I traverse Skyrim. As well as randomn attacks by "Imperials" or "Bretons". Now in a lot of these I've left low level iron weapons or steel lying on the ground, they don't disappear over time, do you think this contributes to freezing ? Should I go round picking them up ?

It will contribute to bloated saves. This will in turn contribute to lag and even crashes. It is best to pick them up and either sell them off, or just make sure you store any weapons that are laying around, in the body of the dead enemy, That way when it resets the area, the excess weapons will go with the dead body.

I'm going to do that then. Funnily enough one of the most troublesome regions for freezing is just outside Riften. On the road leading to Ivarstead. Where I've had by far the most theif/assassin/randomn attacks.

No. Some items seem to remain there permanently. I have a torch that I dropped towards the start of the game that's still sitting there. Same with weapons dropped by enemies. They just float in mid air, until I run into them then they drop to the ground.

Absolutely. If you stash [censored] in a container you don't own and those items go poof, why don't they do that on the main map? Even most items dropped in dungeons disappears over time.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure a lot of dropped weapons aren't disappearing. Maybe it's just because the area hasn't reset yet. I'll try the sleeping 30 days thing then make sure to pick up any weapons enemies drop after that, or store it in their actual bodies.

I know for a fact I dropped a torch outside Riften near the start of my playthrough that hasn't cleared away.

I heard about this couple of months ago, and ever since then I've been picking up all the weapons and stuffing them back in dead bodies. Clean up.

I agree. I do exactly the same, i always stash the stuff i don't need/want onto the dead bodies. That way it gets cleaned up next time the cell resets.

I do the exact same thing on the main map. It's tedious and annoying, but keeps the fracking game playable.

I'm the most methodical player in existance anyway. Stuffing a few weapons into corpses is no big deal for me.

I never really had freezing issue, so it's hard to say. My biggest save file with 250 hours is around 9.5 MB.

That is a good question. I have no idea.

When i started my current character, i had already been through the "bloated save files" bug with my previous char, so i made a point of really cleaning up and never leaving anything dropped on the ground anywhere (inside or outside).

Not sure that would account for your additional 8 MB tho, that's almost twice the size of my saves.

Have you completed a lot of quests ?

I've done several hundered miscellaneous quests, most of the side quests in the game, completed the Civil War Quest, halfway through the Main Quest.

I've also visited every city and town in Skyrim, talked to every NPC and discovered 197 locations.

Could this contribute to the larger save file ?

Most likely. I haven't finished any of the main quests, i've been doing mostly side-quests and dungeon crawls.
I have been pretty much everywhere in the world but have not cleared every dungeon so there's still lots of those that should increase my saves in the future.

So in theory, were you to start a new game, never complete any quests at all, and simply chop wood in Riverwood (after following Hadvar there) for a living and stay at the inn everynight, you would never experience a lockup ?

Most likely. The file will probably stay around 5mb. Unless you drop wood everwhere.

I think the biggest contributor to your bloated save might be how much miscellaneous stuff you might have stashed in your homes. I noticed in one of my saves that after a certain amount I had stashed away, the scroll speed in the inventory menu's slowed way down, in my chests and dressers/endtables.

Probably. I have a save from the very beginning, right when you get off the cart. It's 3.1 MB.

And i agree with the poster above that the amount of stuff you store at your house is most likely a rather large part of the save file.

I have a hell of a lot of stuff stored in all my chests.. They're all mostly books and unique items from quests though so I don't really want to get rid of any of it.
