Dual wielding question..

So I've been switching between dual wield swords, dual wield daggers, and a sword in one hand, dagger in the other right now.

I like it for the most part, but I feel so defenseless. Obviously backpedaling was nerfed, which is a good thing but there really seems to be no other way for me to avoid damage now. I'm stealth based, but you can't get the big damage bonus on a lot of encounters, especially bosses. Usually this means I wind up backpedaling anyway, awkwardly running forward a little to lure harder hitting enemies (I just fought Red Eagle for example) into swinging so I can clumsily slash them a few times like a berserker. With bigger monsters, like giants, I sprint past them and try to make them swing at me; and when they do, I hit them a few times before they can recover.. but that's fine, it's just the smaller enemies I have problems with.

Basically what I'm asking is, am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something?
