Dumpster diving stories

got any good dumpster diving stories to share?
maybe lucky finds or great games

I live in an area FULL of old people which is nice because when they move out or something happens to them, their families come to clean out their old house so I usually end up with what ever goes in the dumpster which is most things

my neighbor moved out recently and I followed his sons truck to the dumpster and waited until they left, then I got in their to see what I could find

2 paintings (one of Jesus, one He made 76 years ago, so no name )
some VHS tapes
a radio/casset player ( a Radio is an older way of getting entertainment/news  )
A hunting catalog from 2008
And some decorative things

I am selling the paintings online :iluvff: right now but they aren't doing to good If you live in west PA or east Ohio and are interested in them or anything else tell me. :tes:

Did you list it as coming out of a dumpster? Might depreciate the value of the painting.

We found a dumpster full of un-expired sausages that were still frozen, and a few boxes of lunchables with the same story.

We find eggs and other foods all the time, one egg/food will bust/go bad and they will throw out the whole box.

Yes I eat food from the dumpster, one time it was even full of Doritos and Cheetos.

What's disgusting is people throwing out craptons of frozen, tasty, unexpired food.

Thanks for that, I didn't know what a radio was. Good to know.

I don't go dumpster diving. My Dad kind of does though, but he has always been special. He never finds anything interesting. It's quite embarrassing actually, why do that? I suppose taking something someone is throwing out that has a "FREE" sign or something on it, but actual dumpster diving and going to the junkyard? That's...strange.

In Yellowknife, NWT you can legally scavenge at the city dump. Which is rather cool actually, because it lowers the amount of...stuff that sits there. I went there on numerous occasions and had a blast. My grandpa found brand new garage doors(estimated at well over 10,000 dollars) that were still in its box. We found stacks upon stacks of paint, and found some jewels in said stacks. Saves us money since paint is ridiculously expensive and it does not last long. Plus a lot more nifty, useful things.

My respect for garbage went up after going to the dump. So many useful things!

The only time I went dumpster diving was to find out what sodding bastard was dumping their rubbish in my bin (and thus filling it before I could even dump my garbage.) I found enough personal information to find out their house number, and after confronting them with a sack of unshredded documents, they were suitably cowed to never do it again. :P

Why would anyone who isn't a homeless tramp, private investigator or stalker be rummaging through people's bins? C'mon, that's nasty.

Most folks in America have no idea what the term "Fly Tipping" means...

I learned it on an accident when I was searching for a friend's place of business in Oldham, UK...in Google Earth...and there in the Google Street View was his 'neighbor', a restaurant employee, "Fly Tipping" right behind a "NO FLY TIPPING" sign into my friend's rubbish. I took a screen shot of it and sent it to my friend and he explained what the sign meant, and that the other guy was indeed guilty of doing that as evident in the pic.

Spoiler
Fly Tipping is merely unauthorized use of a public waste receptacle.

I used to dumpster dive, and found some cool stuff...I forget what all...but now it's mainly for cardboard boxes if and when I need them.

Actually fly tipping means dumping stuff in places where you're not suposed to dump stuff, like roadsides or car parks. Old mattresses or sofas seem to be the main items of choice. I have no idea why it's called fly tipping.

Because you'd be amazed at what some people will throw away. In short, they oftentimes ain't got a clue what they have, sometimes it turns out to be pretty damned valuable....Yes, I have gone dumpster diving before. haven't done it in years though.

People do that here a lot out on nearby country roads...Lazy, disgusting...entitlement minded ne'er do well's who don't have the resources or knowledge of how to get rid of it properly.
In any case, my friend's neighbor was dumping in his bin...when they have their own...apparently full or something.

I really don't know about following someone to the garbage place and rifling through their junk after they drop it off. That's pretty weird guys.

Are you really boasting about finding an old hunting catalog from '08? That's common trash. Would you lose your mind if I sent you one from 2011?

What does this even mean? One painting of Jesus, and another "He" painted? What?

Does anyone else think this thread was meant for a joke?

I don't dumpster dive, but what my city does is they do "bulky pickup" every other month. People dump large items that don't fit in the trash out on the curb. That's a GREAT time to drive around looking for stuff. My best finds have been a chair that only had a slight tear in it and an old TV that still worked. And my cousin once found a bike that was in perfect condition except for a broken chain. The best places to go are the rich neighborhoods, the things they throw away, it's unbelievable. Nobody usually minds, even in the really upscale places. You know the old saying, one man's trash...
