I plan on being a bit sneaky, blade-y, bow-y, with some spells....(this is the sort of character I've played in Morrowind and Oblivion) traps look fun too...

What race would you choose, lovely community?

I'm thinking of following a similar track, and I'd like to try a Khajiit. But just based off initial stat bonuses, Dunmer are better suited to a Nightblade-style character.

I think for a sneaky character Khajiit are better, they have a bonus to Sneak, Lockpicking and Archery.
However, I personally would choose Dunmer because I prefer the way they look.

My fave character was in Oblivion - a murderous Khajit, who was a thief/assassin, but later branched out into vampirism and magic. She loved sneaking into Churches at night, catching two people in bed together, and setting one ablaze with a low damage/long length fire spell... the ensuing panic was hilarious.

After reading through the racial benefits, I think I'll play a Khajiit assassin. They can see in the dark, get a claw damage bonus for fists, and start out with a +10 bonus on sneaking. I'll use my bow from afar to weaken the enemy and then lay some traps or I'll instant-kill them with 15x sneak damage from my dagger. In open combat, I'll just use my claws and won't waste any perks for one-handed weapons. At least that's my plan for now, who knows what'll happen once I start playing. ^^

I am absolutely in your place. Sneaky Mage with Bow is my playstyle -- Illusion and Sneak to mess with 'em, Conjuration to keep them busy, Archery to take them down.

Still not sure about Khajiit or Dunmer, either.

Khajit are my favorite for assassin characters. Nighteye is a substantial benefit.

Since jump height is now the same across all races, I'd choose Dunmer, since I used to play as a Khajiit to get the acrobatics bonus and jump higher. Now that that isn't a bonus, I'd say Dunmer over Khajiit all the way. Especially since Khajiit, imo, look the worst of all the races. Why is their facial "hair" still just a solid looking block. Hair and beards on other races look like hair, but, solely based on screenshots, it seems as though the Khajiit don't have hair, or fur. Just a fur shaped block hanging off their faces.

What I'm doing is for my pure assassin/thief I'm going Khajit. My assassin/mage is going to be Dunmer.
