Is Dynamic Snow a lie ?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 12:34 am

I'm playing Skyrim on Xbox and i am disappointed by the lack of "dynamic" snow as it was said by bethesda.
The snow appears when you explore the mountains and icy plains but it is pretty much static. It never snows randomly in a different climate than the default snowy/icy regions.
I haven't seen a single flake of snow landing on ground persistently.
The weather system is rather average as i see...
Rain also passes trough walls and structures as well as snow.

Wow, really? Dynamic Snow never meant you can watch each individual flake pile up (no game could ever do that).

It means that the game slowly paints the appropriate level of snow texture on surfaces during snowy weather. This is exactly why Bethesda has to watch what it says. People misconstrue things to frightful proportions.

Ok, maybe watching the snow piling up is really too much (i never expected to see that)... but actually weather in skyrim is just like oblivion.
The only difference is that the particle effects doesnt move with the character, resulting in a more immersive experience when you walk (but ... morrowind still had this years ago)
There are grasslands and forests with a temperate climate (where it can rains sometime) and there are icelands and mountains with snow... the weather is not dynamic at all.

Yes, the weather is Dynamic. The regions just have climates. For example, it doesn't snow in the Southern California valleys.

Dynamic is a fancy way of saying "Random". There is no set interval weather patterns appear, every day the game runs a probability check (or a series of them) to determine what weather will happen.

So even Daggerfall had dynamic weather... lol

I'd say 6 or 7 hours. I have explored different regions and they all seemed static with snow coverage.

Did you actually note the names of posters and who said what, comparing them to the people in this thread? Or are you just a victim of confirmation bias?

Use your fire spell to melt some snow in some place where it is found, then wait until it starts snowing and you see the parts where you melted snow gets white again. Thats what it does, if you didnt understand it.

Then you got the bootleg pirated game, you got yourself looking at a hefty Hundred dollar fine pay up. :hubbahubba:

I have already seen lots of snow ingame... but only on snowy or icy areas. The only thing that can confirm this new "Dynamic Weather" system is watching the snow falling randomly in a temperate plain, changing the ground texture to sonwy ones and adding that white snowy shader effect to all the objects in the scene.
But i don't think it will ever happen.

Use your fire spell to melt some snow in some place where it is found, then wait until it starts snowing and you see the parts where you melted snow gets white again. Thats what it does, if you didnt understand it.
Firing at snow doesn't melt it... it only adds an extra layer of burned texture on the ground and you can do that to every surface in the game (and being a decal texture, it will eventually fade itself preventing performance issues... so, snow won't technically cover anything)

Then you got the bootleg pirated game, you got yourself looking at a hefty Hundred dollar fine pay up. :hubbahubba:

people people

think about it, how can they make "solid" snow or rain the game will destroy the very fabric of the universe

no PC on earth could run it

like in all games they have to find a way to "trick" it in the game, like a painting, its not really 3D its just an illusion :D

so lighten up

I agree. Accumulating dynamic snow were one of the first things explained by Todd that hyped A LOT fans and non, and now, nobody gives a damn? Really? Skyrim is the northern province in Skyrim, and IT IS logical that it has snow, not just snow falling and clipping the floor, but almost-real snow. And don't say this is an Xbox 360 issue as Skyrim gives the freacking same experience to everyone.

Asherons call did dynamic snow back in the late 90's on an MMO open world scale (IE snow coming down, building up over-time in area's where it was not snowing/grassy before).

Uncharted 2 did dynamic snow that actually let you m ake pathways in it and had depth to it.

Metal Gear solid 2 back on the ps2 had rain that actually splashed on surfaces, etc.

It can be done, it's simply a matter of wanting to/having the time.

Hell modders made Rain NOT clip through objects in Oblivion, Beth could at least do that.

On that note..where are the convective snow storms, mesocyclonic low pressure systems, and Cumulus Nimbus Mamatus clouds?
