Easy way to tell followers to wait via script? (Non-SKSE)

So, I'm writing in the details for one of the last quests to go into my mod, and I have a very big design choice to make. Basically the quest could go one of two VERY different directions, and which way it goes will depend on how easy I can achieve one of the things. (Don't get me wrong, both directions would be good and fun, I just want to know if #2 is even an option)

Basically I'm hoping to isolate the player so that I can create a 'horror' environment. For those of you who have experience with this, you know that the two key elements to created fear in the player's very being is that you (the game) have full control at all times, and the player has a feeling of no control, or helplessness. However, if the player has a follower tromping along with them, that basically completely destroys both of these elements.

Is there an easy way to control followers so I can tell them to wait at the entrance to this place or something? In previous mods for Fallout I basically just said "Hey player, make your followers wait or they die." Then if anyone but the player entered a trigger they were killed/deleted/etc. However that was a very hack-meat kind of way to do it, and it worked alright in Fallout. But I was hoping to achieve a more professional approach this time.

Followers seem far more controlled and systematic this time around, so I was hoping someone could point out some ways I could easily contain the player's followers, and seperate the player into a controlled environment.

Also, this must not involve SKSE. I have yet to use it whatsoever, and for various reasons I wish to leave it out as a requirement for my mod, so if the only way to do this involves that, then I can simply go the other design direction.

Thanks for any ideas!
