Eclipse Over Northern California This Evening

Post » Tue May 22, 2012 1:00 am

This is kind of exciting. At 6:30pm PST there will be an annular solar eclipse over my town. Where I live it will be almost 100% - don't think I've ever experienced one like that. I've seen a few that were in the 80% range. Should be interesting! Unfortunately I don't have a #14 welder's glass to look through and they're sold out at all the hardware stores in town. :(.

I'm sure a smearing of Marmite will work just as well! Probably.

Believe it or not the "international" food aisle in my local supermarket has that vile stuff.

Err... what's that have to do with an eclipse?

It's not vile, it's awesome!

I suppose I should point out that it'll likely make rubbish eye protection before anyone thinks I'm serious. Even if you apply it directly to your eyes.

Very interesting. I can't really remember the last time I saw an eclipse myself, but I would love to see one again. :(

I've been terrified of eclipses since childhood, when I was told watching one directly could make you blind (my worst fear). Photos of eclipses are enough for me, I admit it is impressive when you see one in real life, though.

Happening here in mid afternoon. How dare they darken my bright sunshiny day. I've seen quite a number of eclipses in my life. As a kid we would set up boxes so we could view it safely. Now I generally don't bother watching other than a couple of seconds when it's full or near full.

Going blind is my number 2 fear, right after losing one or both of my hands. I honestly wouldn't care too much if I lost my hearing (would be a definite shame, though).

Anyway, I've never seen a solar eclipse in my life, but the idea fascinates me. Maybe one day...

I remember the last one. I think I was nine and I remember it occurring during recess. It was pretty cool.

I'm in southern Idaho and I think I should be able to see something. I don't have any special tool or glasses or anything. I guess I'll just take quick glances or something. I can't imagine looking at the shadow through a hole in a piece of paper would be all that exciting.

Wrong thread.

Since I already posted though... will this eclipse give us powers if we see it?

We are seeing it beginning in a couple of minutes unless you have cloud cover in the part of the state you are in.

I live in Northern California too! And I just got done with my Astronomy class @ college this semester, so this is exciting!

Where do you live? Perhaps I can see it as well?

And yes, I know about not staring at it. Dont stare at the Corona!

EDIT: I think it is already happening for me. It got a little dim outside and the sun if you look at it with peripheral vision for a split second got ALOT brighter.

I got to see it a little bit, it took three pairs of sun glasses and a thin wash rag (for filter, odd but it works) but I managed to see it.

Well, the peak passed 30 minutes ago. Kind of "meh". Even thought we were directly under it there was the "ring of fire" so it was still pretty bright out (even being 6:30pm). It was just something like when a cloud passes. Hopefully I'll see a total eclipse something in my life - that'll be a lot more dramatic.

Friend of mine posted on Facebook a shadow the trees and eclipse were making on his neighbor's house:

That's epic.

I live on the east coast, so no eclipse for me :( We never get to experience cool stuff like that. Whenever there is something we can see, a storm comes in and blocks it all up.

That's really cool. I was outside washing my car at the time - I didn't see anything interesting like that!

I didnt see it either, but like I said above, it was very dim outside and I could tell the corona of the sun was very very bright.

I was in Zion national park doing some volunteer work anyway, so I was in southern Utah when I saw the FULL annular eclipse. My neighbor was with me and she got a bunch of photos. I'll upload them if anyone is interested.
