Economy, currencies, prices and monetary concerns

Post » Wed Oct 31, 2012 1:49 am

I just realized that TESO wouldn't feature the Septims we are used to.

I think it could be an opportunity for the Devs to implement an economic system based on the overall players' behaviour.

For example, each of the four factions (Pact, Dominion, Covenant and Cyrodiil) could have its own currency. Exchange rates could be determined by how well the faction behaves from an economic point of view.

It would open very interesting roleplaying options, e.g. allow for trader character, or diplomatic quests aiming at sealing trade agreements. Or quest aiming at destroying or stealing supplies of some goods, or at burning some mill, in order to raise prices or ruin a local economy. (I think Todd Howard mentioned something like this during the development of Skyrim.)

I know I don't tell much in this, but I haven't much thought to it yet. What do you think about it? What are your ideas around this topic ?

I don't want to be hindered because my faction members decided to inflate my currency, initially making all the coin I've made worthless in matter of days. So I'm going to say No.

They called them "drakes" in Morrowind, and that's a far better than Septim, seeming as, well, there's been no Tiber yet.

Drake for me it is.

They really don't seem interested in having the factions interact outside of war, so I doubt we'll get any relative currency values, but it would be nice to see different systems used by the different factions, if only for flavour. Copper silver and gold is just so boring now, At least dress them up with some fancy names; maybe the pact could have Ash pennies, silver hists, and golden giants? The dominion might have the Alinor in the place of the goild coin, and maybe some Valenwood carved coin called a Bone for mid/low level coin, etc.

No more anachronistic than finding them in millennia-old tombs and barrows sealed two empires before Tiber was born. It'll be interesting to see what they use; some lore buffs argue that when Talos retroactively chim'd Cyrodiil he also transformed all currency everywhere into that of his likeness, past and future. There's arguments for both, especially if they are using nu-Cyrod, but still I hope we don't see the Septim.

I agree, copper, silver and gold are so dumb names. Besides it would be nice to have some references to the lore in their names. For example, to Z'en (whose worship is vanishing or has just vanished at the time of TESO, I think) and Zenithar.

I agree again, those coins are immersion-breaking. I stated it already http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1419752-shiny-clinky-gold/page__view__findpost__p__21713236, yesterday.

Besides, it would be great in my opinion to be able to forge money, to be a counterfeiter, or to sneak into the mint where the coins are manufactured.

Definitely want to see faction-specific currency. Other than that, I don't much mind. Of course, if the devs decide that they want no trade between factions, then they will be spending considerable time and money to stop people "cheating" when these players just see it as sensible use of an alt on another faction. I hope that they manage to strike a balance between an immersive and fair segregation of factions, whilst not having to enforce numerous arbitrary laws. Real-world item trading is the last thing a new MMO wants to have to worry about.
