Editing loading screen text

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2011 10:11 am

I would like to adapt some of the loading screen texts to the mods I`m using. Now what`s the best way to do it? Am I safe to open TES CS, load the Oblivion.esm, edit the texts and save the changes to an ESP? Is there a danger of dirty edits showing up due to CS bugs? If not, it doesn`t matter where this new ESP comes to sit in my load order, right? Because I don`t have any other mods that touch the loading screens.

If you look at the loading screens in the CS you'll notice that the same image gets used with different texts to produce multiple forms. Instead of changing existing forms, it may be better to create new ones, which can use the same images, but with new text. If the new screens are tied to entering locations that only exist in your mod(s), there can't be any effect on other mods. Even if they're additional random screens, they won't count as "dirty edits".

I`m not sure I understood everything you said. I want to edit existing load screen texts or more specific: I want to replace some of the original texts with new ones, because the original ones are obsolete due to some of my mods. I won`t touch the images, I just want to replace the text in some of the loading screens. So you confirm that editing some of these texts can`t possibly harm any of my mods and therefore it doesn`t matter where I load the ESP? I just wanted to be sure I don`t screw anything up, because it`s my first ESP. Thanks.

So you really do need to remove the original texts? Then a replacement is justified. There's no dirty edit problem here, because nobody else's mod can depend in the load screens.
