During the "Cornered rat" main story quest, when you find the old man in the locked room, my PC version of skyrim has been glitching and the man will not open the door to follow me. Since this is the main quest and my first playthrough, what should I do? I don't want to have to start the game over but I will if needed... also, I don't have any mods installed. I had 5 installed but removed them once I noticed this issue. Can anyone help? thanks

Try console command

setstage MQ202 160

. If he won't start talking, try

setstage MQ202 170
