ESO and Multi-Core UseHyper Threading Question

Post » Mon Jun 03, 2013 10:50 am

I've looked around a bit, but I'm assuming there isn't any official info yet due to no official system reqs.

But what do you guys think? Will ESO really utilize 4 cores? And will hyper threading make a big impact?

I have WoW open in windowed mode, and I watch all 4 cores and notice that while one core is at ~80%, the others all kinda stay around 20% and spike up to about 60% at times. Given it's an older CPU (q8200 2.33ghz) I'm not really sure if it is utilizing all cores equally. Would ESO do a better job of this? And few games use Hyper Threading right now, but do you think ESO might?

Thanks :)

It is extremely doubtful that ESO will make use of 4 cores or hyper-threading.Watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4PDoy-mi0A

Unless there is some indication that I am aware of, I don't think we could possibly have idea on this. For all we know it utilizes more of the Video Cards power than the processor itself. It will be interesting too see some benchmarking when the game is at least in open beta and find out some information on this.

That doesn't answer anything...

His tests are for Witcher 2 and BF3...neither game is an MMO. Neither of those games is going to process 200 people in a single pvp match. That said I of course have my doubts on the beneficial factor of threads and cores to any current game but that doesn't mean I could legitimately state that this game would receive any benefit because I cannot possibly know that.

Doesn't matter in the slightest what games he tested. Its at the core of game design. He pretty much even says that in the video!

More games going forward will but whether ESO does, haven't read anything. It will be more on the minds of developers in the future especially with the focus on the PS4 and Xbox One.

I hope this game doesn't turn out as bad as guild wars 2, look at all the people complaining over there about lag because the game only uses 1 core, even people with hd 7870's and gtx 770's are complaining about low framerate and stuttering which is quite sad. So I really hope zenimax doesn't make the same mistake, support multi-cores for god sakes v_v

Wow, you are completelly missing the point I am making. I know its at core of game design, I studied it, I have a bachelors degree in game design(worst investment ever by the way). That doesn't mean that this game couldn't possibly utilize more than previous games. As far as I am aware nobody has any idea of the design structure of this games engine, supposedly there was some hero engine that was later scrapped. Are you missing the part where he shows that games have in fact made steps into needing more processing power, its when he tries to run Bf3 with a single core. That proves my point that a game can indeed progress past this what previous games have needed. Like I said I have my doubts on this game but again I couldn't possibly make a proper assessment without any knowledge of this game.

The game is clearly not going to be very system intensive, so let's just leave it at that.

It can still not be system intensive, and still potentially utilize 4 cores. At any rate, 6 or 8 core CPUs seem to be excessive atm.

From that video linked earlier in the thread, it seemed as if hyper threading lowered FPS in both BF2 and Witcher. Why?

Hyper threading splits the queue in half to divide on the processor and doesn't divvy it out based on workload. For some things it causes problems :tops:

Overclockers will sometimes even turn hyperthreading off as the process generates excess heat without boosting performance.

My bad, you are right eventually software will progress to handle more and more. Heck, I didn't think they had went beyond 2 cores, until I did some digging to find out games are starting to be developed to utilize up to 4.
