Exotic pets you want but can't have

Post » Sat Jun 29, 2013 5:05 pm

Every now and then I fall into the black hole that is the pets section of YouTube and end up watching strings of videos with strange pets. I am particularly fascinated with birds and it'd be absolutely awesome to have an http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8LBnZOjHqA. They're lovable, very affectionate animals, problem is that they're quite expensive and very needy so I'm probably not up to the task of caring properly for one. I did briefly look after a parrot for someone else once, and he would start screaming like a maniac as soon as he was left alone in a room. Apparently cockatoos are even noisier than parrots, so I'm not sure it's something neighbors would appreciate. My only real experience with pet ownership is dutch rabbits who aren't high maintenance at all (though I suspect mine was worse than most, he'd refuse to eat if left alone too long).

I've seen some other cool animals like fennec foxes (also very, very noisy) and pygmy jerboas. The Japanese in particular seem quite obssed with those weird, cute little critters. Are there any that you are head over heels for?

All the invasive species that would utterly destroy the habitats of native species.

A shark with a frickin' laser on it's head.

I'll settle with a squirrel with a machine gun though.

I don't want any. I like to see these animals in their natural habitat. I do have a hermit crab, though. He's been with me for at least 10 years. I am not fully against owning an exotic pet, but only will not be sad about it if the animal is in a household that can accommodate the creature's needs. If the household cannot, I will be a bit angry.

An aunt of mine has or maybe had pet birds. I think they were cockatoos. The things loved to pull jokes on me from their cage and would wake up the entire house. I was on vacation in Florida to visit her and my family stayed at her house. The birds were awesome, though.

I have always wanted a reptile as a pet, though. I love all animals and can't hate a single species fully. I used to beg for an iguana as a kid. I loved how they looked and loved how calm they seemed whenever I saw one. Also wanted a garter snake once, too. I've held two milk snakes in my life and loved holding them.

I had some pet worms once. My special needs class had us keep pet worms. It was fun. I brought my pet worms everywhere I could.

In Ohio, I can have whatever pet I desire as long as I have the money.

If I had a preference, it would probably be a Rhino though.

Unless it is certain breeds of dog. Someone in my neighborhood has a coydog and keeps it off a leash. Its almost attacked my mom and has been a pest to the neighborhood in general. A coydog is what happens when a domestic dog is bred with a coyote. I don't know if they are usually the result of a poodle and coyote breeding still, though. Just know that person shouldn't have hers off a leash.

Well that is more of an ownership thing than being allowed to have the animal itself.

If you wanted you could own a coyote or wolf as long as you could prove that you can keep it under control.

Yeah and he killed himself. He had like 50 exoctic animals, most were killed but some were saved and taken to the Columbus zoo.

Here it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Ohio_exotic_animal_release

The law to sell exoctic animals was suspended for a while, but it might be back in place.

In Ohio they legally let you keep dangerous animals as pets in a residential zone? Somehow I find that hard to believe unless you have a zoo setup with proper permits and such. What about if you live next to a school or within the zone?

I would love to have a pet tiger if possible but I would settle for 1 of these guys: http://www.thisblogrules.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/finger-monkey-12.jpg

I would want all kinds of pets, but can't have them since exotic pets belong to the nature and not in my living room.

Tarantula Hawk

No risk of that escaping and royally ****ing up the ecosystem whatsoever.

I don't know why so many people think dogs came into being as domesticated animals. Some animals are more prone to domestication than others, but just because an animal isn't a cat or a dog doesn't mean it 'belongs to the wild' in my opinion. I read a National Geographic article (cutting edge research hehe) where in just about thirty years some Russian geneticists managed to breed completely domesticated foxes by breeding the friendliest pup's of each generation (which I guess happened to domestic dogs via natural selection sort of, where people didn't keep nasty dogs as pets as much as friendly ones breeding the 'wild'ness out of them. Same with Doberman guard dogs being cranky).

That said exotic pets like monkeys seem pretty high maintenance and/or dangerous, and I don't think every animal can be domesticated (chimpanzee's for example) or shouldn't be (tigers or lions). That said I think a hedgehog would be a pretty cool pet, because they seem fairly similar to a guinea pig.

I don't like taking animals out of their natural habitat, and I live in Norway, but if we disregard all that I'd want a monkey.
