Experiences with using older PCs?

Hi Skyrimmers,
Anybody who is using a really old PC? What is your impression:
Does it make sense to try playing the game with my old Oblivion PC (so it's from 2006)...? Or is it a pain?
Thanks!

Post your system specs or simply check minimum requirements for Skyrim and compare that to your CPU, GPU and RAM.

I don't have high end PC and it works great on. I'm using GTX280, Phenom X4 and 4Gb RAM. I've seen people with lower specs than mine playing the game without any problems.

Okay, I definitely have something lower than Athlon X2 (not even close to your Phenom).
If dual core is required I should first buy a new heater, I guess.

Everything on my laptop is higher than minimum specs....except my video card, which is an old nvidia geforce 8600 gt.
I haven't tried it on PC but I assume my video card will ruin everything. I think I'll download it and try just for fun (I'm playing the PS3 version)

Running a X2 250 processor with a HD4850 gfx and 4gig of ram on ultra minus the shadows (they're on medium) and it runs fine, no fps drops. This game seems to run sweet on an older system from my experience.

I'm playing (fine) with ultra settings on a Core2 duo 3ghz, Gforce 9800gt-1 gig, 4 gig ram, on Win XP. (fine) = I do have the "random few second freeze while outdoors bug", but when that does not occur, I am getting 30-40 fps. I think the key to running this game is the amount of ram and processor speed. Windows 7 would probably help as well with that bug I mentioned as it seems to only happen with Win XP.

AA and AN are both at 4 I think, and the view/fade distances are all set at about the middle of the slider.

Athlon X2 64 2.1GHz (dual core), 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 7300GT. The graphics card here is the real weak link. I've had to hack the ini file to disable as much detail as possible and set the game in 640x480 to get it at all playable; VSync is disabled and I found a performance hack (using a d3d9.dll file from Oblivion, apparently) which made it possible.

My laptop I carry around while I'm on business travels has this configuration:

Core II Duo 2.5 GHz
ATi 4650
4GB main ram 1GB video ram

display resolution 1360x768

I can play with all the distances set to max, AA 2X AF 16x textures set to high, shadows to medium and blur to minimum.
This gives me 25-30fps in exterior cells which is enough for a slow paced game like this one.

Factors that I found impacting resolution above all
AA (4x makes the game stuttering)
Shadows: high or ultra (same as above)
Blur / postprocessing (I like to keep it disabled anyway)

I *don't* have dual core, but that's my only lacking requirement. Runs fine with textures set to high and everything else medium or low. I do get the occasional 5fps but mostly I'm around 15-20. Better than when I used to run MW on a REALLY subpar computer!! :D

My PC is four years old, graphics card is the weakest point (9600 GS), can't recall the other specs as I am at work but it's running very smoothly on medium seetings and looks great to me.
