My partner mentioned something about the game being split into realms tonight (for the PVP aspect) I was wondering if that would stop me from being able to visit the different parts of Tamriel.

Just read the FAQ. It will answer most of your questions and will ofer up-to-date info.

You can explore all content with one character. The other alliance areas can not be explored until your character reaches the level cap, level 50. However if it is your intent to explore that content with a friend they will have to roll their character in the same alliance that you roll in, otherwise you will be split up for the duration of your time spent in ESO with those two characters.
