Extreme Sound Lag

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 7:55 pm

1st: Sry if my English isnt good, cause i am from Germany and my English gone a bit "Rusty" over the last 5 Years ^^
2nd: I already have Fallout 3 with all addons, and it still works perfect - without any Glitches or anything else

And now to the Topic:

I've got the Game today, Registered it on Steam - it downloaded the newest Patch, and i started the Game.
it worked fine, until it came to the first Conversation with the Doc: i saw his Lips moving, but no Sound came out.. then his Lips stopped moving, and nothing happened.

I waited for the next Minute, and still - Nothing happened. So i went to the Menu by Pressing ESC, and back to Game (the Same way ^^)
Suddenly, the Lips of the Doc moved again, and i heard his Voice.... The first Sentence came (I thought you never make it oder something like that)
Then the game went Silent again. And The Sound came only back, when i left the Game for the Menu and got back to game. FOR the next sentence

So (to make it Quick) i can only her a Person speaking (for only one Sentence), if i press ESC during the Talk. And i even hear the Gunshots ONLY after i get back from the Menu.

I Noticed that (when i was lying on the Bed in the Doc's room) there seems to be a Endless Sound-loop that repeats every 2-3 seconds. And when i Press ESC some Other Sound file gets in the Loop.

My System:

Windows XP SP2 (i also tried it with SP 3 - same thing)
AMD Xp 3200+
Soundblaster Live! 1024 (latest Drivers)
ATI X1950 GT 512 MB with Catalyst Ver.: 10.2
2 GB RAM

Here ist the DX-DIAG (in German): http://www.fileuploadx.de/308496

I dont know if this Problem is known, but -cause the Game is unplayable for me - so i hope, it will be fixed in the next Patch

I finally managed to hear the proper sounds within the proper time, i only had to turn the Priority of the Game to "Above normal" and the sounds work fine.
But now i have another problem: The game extremely lags when i am encountering a enemy group of at least 3 persons. (Fight aside Ringo and Sally with the Gang searching for Ringo)
This only disappears when i set the Priority back to normal. But then i don't even hear, being shoot. So its still "Suboptimal", and i am not able to play the game -.-'

I begin to think, that Obsidian changed something within the "Multicore Optimization" -and this is causing all the Problems on Single Core Systems.
This is the only way i can explain myself, why F3 is working without any Bugs, and FNV won't.

I'm still looking forward for a patch -fixing this-, to be released soon.

There are fixes but all of them are a broken deal.. If you use the priority increase, you'll get horrible movement delay, bad performance, etc. If you use the silenthill fix from ENB you wont be able to use certain graphical features like anti-aliasing and multisampling transparancy and of course you'll have lower performance then WITHOUT the fix and with 2x AA on..

I'm very skeptical about Obsidian/Bethesda caring about single core users, even though the game runs fine which means I doubt they'll EVER make a patch for us.. like Bioware did in like a week or so for single core users. Now thats what I call customer service not this [censored]..

I'll prolly bump this thread till I get banned or gets deleted in which case it will prove my point of their care for paying customers.

I've already tried the SH Fix, but it helped nothing. And i did the same way, just as Said: The cfg file in the Data Folder, the other files in the Main Folder of the Game (where the Exe's are)
but nothing

I doubt they'll EVER make a patch for us..

i really hope - no I BEG - you're Wrong.
But if you're Right, then it is the Last time, Obsidian has seen any Cash from my Pocket. And i am Consequent - no matter how good their Future Games might be.

Dude..a single dll file fixes half of the problem and that dll was used for like an old game.. If they DID want to help single core users..they would've by now..

Hey..... Maybe they fix some other problems too, and then get us a Patch - not only a fix for ONE Problem . I can wait. Not for long, but i can wait. And a Patch WILL come

I have the same exact problem with the sounds. As of now you can set the game to play in windowed mode(it will slow performance though), or you can set the process priority for New Vegas to high( but this too will slow performance) so far IDK what else to do so maybe they'll get a patch out soon... o and i'm not doing that silent hill mess so that gets that out of the way

I'm still Optimistic. (what es can i do ^^)
Otherwise i hope, Bethesda has something to say about this game too.
After all, their Brand (so, the Good Name) is on the Game.
And if the Community remains upset, their ("Good" - from my side: Very Good) Reputation will suffer too among many "Paying Costumers".
And i don't (hope) think, they might like that.

(I wouldn't, if i knew that a Project - where my Brand stands for - has been left alone careless -without Costumer-Support - after Release)

I'm still :P

To get back to topic:
I tried to fix the Problem, the Other way:
Instead of raising the Priority of the Game itself (which causes other Problems) , i tried to reduce the Priority of all the Other Programs, that run under my Name within the TASK Manager -even the Explorer. I even stopped my Antivirus and changed the hardware Acceleration of the Soundcard to a smaller one (I did all this changes during the Game - running minimized in the Background)

And i have to say: This worked *Yuppieee !!*

I heard Gunshots, i could Fast Travel and speak to other NPCs and everything was OK.....

but not for long.
I - to be sure that i really did it, that i finally found a Solution that could work for me - Closed the Game completely and restarted it. And all the nice, beautiful, wonderful, exciting, GOODLIKE & WORKING sounds were gone again. :(
I even tried to download some Community Sounds from Nexus in hope that they could fix something, but this also proved to be wrong.

maybe there is something more.
Why should the Soundbug disappear when i reduce the Priority of all the other Tasks, why can i Fast travel without the Soundbug appearing again , and why i cant reproduce this?
There has to be something more, than only the Multicore Optimization.
If this wouldn't mean RE-Installing all the Programs i (today) need to run my PC the way its now, i would Remove nearly all of them. I think, there is more

dunno.. the game has poor resource control..at least for singlecores.. simple dll's that increase fps, etc. just means poorly developed game. How can you rls a game if you havent done some decent testing. Casual developers ruining gaming. Like I said, dont expect a fix for us. If you do, you'll be a lot more pissed when you'll see they didnt bother to do [censored] about it.

Now I DID IT. REALLY !!!!
And i can Reproduce it (on My System ^^)

The way it works on MY PC:
Close all the Programs you don't need during the play (i.e. Rocketdock, Rainmeter,Printer-Drivers, ICQ, MSN - whatever )

1.) Open the Task-Manager
2.) Reduce the Priority of all remaining Task (you are able to) running UNDER YOUR NAME to the lowest - INCLUSIVE STEAM.
2a.) Leave the Explorer-Task at "Lower than Normal" (you can also try the Lowest, but i think, that there could be a Stability Problem after that)
3.) Start Fallout New Vegas
3a.) You will still not hear any gunshots etc. - but this is a kind of Steam-Fault.
3b) Because Steam' Task-Priority is set to "Lowest", all Programs launched by Steam are in the same Priority as Steam, so the only way what to do is
4.) Alt+Crtl+Del and Raise ONLY the Priority of New Vegas to Normal,
5.) Return to the Game, and
6.) Enjoy

let me know if it worked 4U2 ^^
There might be some room for Optimization - so, if u find something, let me know

Stil lthe same.. by the way.. its not because of steam your game priotiy changed..its because of explorer.exe. Just tested. I dont have many background programs runnign except for the obvious ati ccc and a light av software. Tried what you've said.. The sound didnt change when I set the games priority to normal. If I do set it higher then well the obvious problem arises ( stutering and movement delay ).

Sigh... This is like the most ridiculous nightmare for gamers come true... Obshidtian making a sequel to a Bugthesda game...

Everything Obsidian lays their hands on turns to scheisse (all their sequels are sub-par to the originals and their original Alpha Protocol was just... I won't even bother to comment on that one).
They never have enough time (or just don't bother) to finish a game, and I'm not just talking just about the bugs. They leave games incomplete, with stuff missing (Kotor 2 shall not be forgotten).
They never even get to the testing and bug removing... As for Bethesda... well at least they try to fix their bugs and the ones they don't, fans fix with unofficial patches. And while I can understand that the Gamebryo engine supports [censored] physics, there's just no excuse for the [censored] animations they create... (I can't believe New Vegas still uses the same crap).

I'm not sure who is working on patching this beta, but I'll say this much:
If Obsidian is patching we are screwed.
If Bethesda is patching we are probably still screwed.

As for the single cpu customers, they won't get an official fix (even if it's an easy one) because they are under the minimum system specs.

hmmpf...!?
It worked for me, and I've already played for several Hours. Without any Sound-Glitches, Bugs or Lags
But i really don't get it. I think by now, that the only Exit out of this Mess, is to spare some Money and Upgrade the PC to (at least) a Dualcore :'-(
And i think, i should do this - even if i don't want to. My PC has "survived" for nearly 8 Years without greater changes, (Only changed Graphics once, and HDD from IDE to Raid-SATA) so maybe its lay him to Rest. But I wait till the next Patch, and if he didn't changes the Problems i've occurred, then its time

Bioware gave single core users an official patch quite fast. That just shows how [censored] some devs are in comparrison to Bio. No wonder kotor 1 and me series are superior to everything bethesda/ob[censored]dian did.

For me it also worked. However, the lags appear again. The good point is, they they are not so much intensive or frequent any more. The lag after few second is over and it happens every 5-10 minutes so it is not so bad. At least the product I have supported is playable up to some extend...

Maybe we can try to write some windows script that reduces the priority of all active user processes and starts the game process with the normal priority.
I will try this when I will find some time.

I don't know why no one is using the silent hill patch. It worked for me. I didn't even use all the files included. I just used the d3d9.dll and enbseries associated with my video card. Haven't had a single sound issue or crash yet. I'm still tweaking with video settings, as I'm running the game on a P4 3.0Ghz at 1920x1080. Runs decently.

because, as explained before, game runs a hell of a lot better then without and I cant even use antialiasing.. So how the hell can I play with a dll/cfg that has a hell of a worse performance then without the dll/cfg with antialiasing?

If anyone can tweak that dll to remove certain features or how to edit the cfg..or combine that dll with the performance boost dll, would be nice..

Because i tried it.... I did as described (CFG file in the Data Folder, the others in the Main Game Folder) and it didn't worked for me.
If it would work, why should i search for an another Solution ? ;)

For me it also worked.

At least.... it worked for someone else too^^
However. I still have Performance troubles [ I try some other DLL file or try to activate the Distance-Fog in NV (which has been disabled) ]- but the Sound is perfect. I've played yesterday for nearly 5 hours, and without no sound bugs
