Facial Piercings - Not a totally horrible idea?

Post » Thu Aug 30, 2012 8:44 am

My girlfriend wants me to get a lip ring (right of bottom lip) and a few more piercings in my ears (I have one on my left lobe).

Its not just her idea, I'd look pretty good with them. I have that kind of face, goes with my long shaggy hair.

My only problem is that I wouldn't know if I my current job would make me take them out (leading to them closing).

Also, I'm going to college next year to get start my Elementary Education Degree, and I want to if It would hinder getting a job in the field.

Also thinking about dyeing my hair a dark teal (not to worried about that, I can always dye it back)

If you're worried about your job, your best bet is to ask them. Further down the line, you'll almost certainly be asked to take them out if you're working in a primary school. But as that's some way down the line maybe you shouldn't let it worry you for now. After on, they'll still heal if you have to take them out at a later date, wont they?

I don't think "my girlfriend wants me to do it" is a good reason to go into any sort of body modification, though, even one that isn't permanent. What do you want?

As for the hair - go for it. Why are you asking us?

I wouldn't think it would hinder getting a job in the field, but I wouldn't wear the lip ring to the interview. Also, if you get hired, most schools have a lip ring policy that I've been to so you'd have to adhere to whatever dress policy they have.

My piercings all went vacant back when I started interviewing for senior-level positions. They never made a comeback, although they were in use long enough that they never closed and probably never will.

If you are old enough to worry about not being taken seriously enough for anything other than a barista, don't do it. ;) Same goes for sleeve/neck tattoos and gauged ears. Its hard enough to get a good job these days, don't handicap yourself further in an attempt to "express individuality". So many people do the piercings and tattoos route these days its lost any outre meaning it may have once had. Even still, many employers aren't going to overlook them.

For 1, it's mostly your girlfriend wanting you to do this. Believe it or not it is.. And, I don't think men look that great with piercings. Some can pull it off. Noses or lips maybe but not ears.

Well if you want to go into education, don't get any more piercings or dye your hair teal. No one will hire you.

Do they have fake ones you could get?

If so you have the both of best worlds right there.

I've had teachers who have tongue piercings and eyebrow piercings (though none with dyed hair unless you want to count old ladies) but they taught high school so

Yeah you probably shouldn't do it. Most employers will think it looks unproffesional.

It isn't just because my gf wanted me to, she just suggested it.
I thought it might be a good idea.

Guess that settles it then, guess its better not to since I have to grow up sometime :ermm:

That might be the best reason to do it (or at least to dye your hair) - it can't hurt to do this one last thing before you get out there and start working :)

I had my labret and right side of my bottom lip pierced for years. I loved them. But I got a corporate job this year and had to take them out. Still rockin the tongue ring, tho.

You know this probably isn't such a bad idea, if you are worried about trouble it is best to get piercings where nobody will notice.

It depends on where you work during college. I work at champs sporting goods and i got pierced ears and a pierced eyebrow, and they didn't care. But if you go to teach elementary, i really wouldn't recommend piercings or teal hair.

Uh i dont like those, this one girl i met had one of those on her......... yea

This will negatively impact you getting a job in teaching, piercings, dyed hair, and all. And don't think about getting tattoos that are pretty visible. Also, your GF wanting you to have those piercings is not an excuse.

The only way you may be able to pull it off, is if you have tenure. And by that time, you'll be old.

Lol, women. I know how you feel. When a man has a girlfriend or a wife, a man loses its personality and starts wearing matching shoes and shirts.

Actually about tats, you can get them if you want to teach(high school at least). But you gotta over them, If you gotta sleeve, long sleeves every day, neck tat, turtlenecks. But don't get your face or hand tatted.

How? i like to match and i got a personality.

While teenages can get away with facial piercings, for anyone past their early 20s they just look tacky and unprofessional. Low-key ear piercings can still work, but avoid anything beyond that if you want people to take you seriously in any kind of professional capacity.

They shouldn't care about the ears. My art teacher has gauges. Lip ring I doubt they'd allow though.

I feel the need to be indignant since I'm in my 40s and I have my nose pierced, but in general terms I agree with this; however much one wants to express one's individuality, most facial piercings, "interesting" hair colours etc are right out. A few decent jobs can be found at places where nobody cares, but they're the exception rather than the rule. And I also have to agree with avoiding tattoos on the face and hands, given their permanence, what seems like a good idea at the time probably isn't...

I am getting a some ink done when I turn 18 (can't in alaska until then, even with parental permission).
Its going to be on my right shoulderblade, so it shouldn't be a problem to cover up.

A tongue ring doesn't sound to bad. I hear it hurts a bit when you get it done (thats not a problem, I deal with pain well)

Is there a certain length of time until you'll be able to remove them and not have the hole close up?
Also, how long does the lisp phase last? I remember when my brother got his done, he was talking weird for awhile.

And its not just my girlfriends idea, like I said, it was her suggestion and I rather liked it.

I'm only a senior, I won't have my degree until about 2017 and I don't think I'll have any jobs were I need to be "professional " (ofcourse all jobs you need to, but you know what I mean) until then.

Its just that I've always been the goodie two shoes and do to circumstances with my parent's, I never really had anyone that I could relay on or any "carefree teen" years. Things are better now, and I'd kind of like to do something a little bit childish.

That may sound crazy and stupid, it does a bit to me. Usually I'm the most pragmatic and responsible person someone would know.
