Fallout on facebook: over 111k lines of voice acting.

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 5:34 pm

Exactly what it says on the tin. The Fallout facebook page just updated with this little tidbit:

Many years of ?#?Fallout4? voice recording complete! Just over 111k lines. More than Fallout 3 and Skyrim combined.

First thing: Cool! Second thing: Bethesda's really obsessed with the number 111.

Wait, so they were still doing voice acting? If they give Codsworth special dialogue for John Cena characters, I'll be happy.

I hope they used a variety of voice actors and not just five to record all of these lines.

That'd place it at significantly more than Fallout New Vegas, which I think was 80k lines. This truly is shaping up to be the biggest and craziest game Bethesda has ever made.

Well, I'm entirely expecting them to reuse voice actors for generic NPCs, but they've managed to get a bigger cast with each game since Oblivion. So I'm also expecting improvements in this area, for sure.

And they haven't announced any celebrity talent yet, which is interesting.

I think that actually means it now has the world record for amount of voiced lines in a video game. Previously held by New Vegas, and before that by Fallout 3.

I wonder what the amount of voice actors was. Obviously quite a lot, I think Skyrim had more than New Vegas, not sure about how much Fallout 3 had. Im sure we all remember the handful of VAs that Oblivion had though, that wasnt that great.

Uhm...wasn't the number 175,000 until just now?

Not really. One of the voice directors said that in an oblique comment that he emphasized was not entirely accurate. IIRC it was in one of the Courtenay Taylor interviews that Kal-El Bogdanove also appeared on. At one point he was asked about the number of lines and gave some number while being clear that he didn't actually know for sure. And then I think later on in the interview he said "175,000 lines" not as an accurate statement, but because he just had to say a big number like that in the context of the conversation.

Ah, ok. I thought I'd heard Todd say that in the demo or somewhere.

175k was the amount of words, not lines, that was thrown around in an interview. I think it'll be higher then that unless they had a lot of single word answers.

Looking up the longest videogame scripts on this link over here: http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_longest_video_game_scripts

Looks like I was wrong about New Vegas, it was 65k lines. Fallout 3 also had 40k. Fallout 4 looks set to beat even a whole bunch of games with unvoiced lines, making it one of although not -the- longest game script in gaming so far.

This is really exciting. I think I heard somewhere that the gameworld is going to be 4x the size of Fallout 3, and I even have trouble imagining just how big that would make the game. That 20 million sales from Skyrim really made a difference, and this year is a wonderful year to be a gamer.

When you look at the games with greater line counts, they're all visual novels - which aren't exactly going to be splashing their budget on complex game systems or graphics coding (though I guess any live-action video might chew up the budget some).

Compare FO4's line count with those of comparable genres, and it comes out way higher :).

I hope that number isn't inflated by huge numbers of "aarrggghh", "oof", "die!" and "mercy!" combat barks

I honestly don't know. If the script is 111k lines then I would say no, however they said they recorded that, so I am inclined to say yes. Though if they are directly comparing them to FO3 and Skyrim like that, Id have no fear.

Im not even sure how many lines combat barks would amount to. Skyrim probably has the most combat barks, with the standard bandits referring to your race in combat, but then there's only a couple unique ones?

I don't think its significant, though. I doubt there'd be a thousand of them, or anything beyond a hundred at max.

Even if there are 10k of them, still 101k lines of dialouge is insane. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game :D

But if that counts the protagonist, this will be the smallest yet. Male and female voice actors for the main protagonist, who will just voice replies to pretty much anything said. It'll probably nearly half the amount, making it really small.

I suspect you are quite accurate in your assessment. After all why would they NOT count the voice of the main character?

Its still hard for me to truly think about how -big- this game is. 4x the size of Fallout 3 apparently. That is a lot of game to go around.

Even with the 26k lines from both male and female voice actors, that'll make 85k in NPC lines. This is opposed to the 65k total lines in Fallout New Vegas, which holds the current world record for most voiced lines in a game.

Well, if they reply to everything others say, bar the passing remark from NPCs, it should be more than 26k combined, I imagine. I'm seeing quite a bit less than 85k lines from NPCs.

It was stated in a E3 interview that they had recorded 13,000 lines for each voice actor, making it 26,000 in total.

That's all the information we have right now, anyways.

Todd stated that the two voice actors had recorded around 13,000 lines each, which would still leave 85,000 lines for NPC's.

Now let's hope all of this dialogue isn't just greater in quantity but also quality, a mass of dialogue is only indicative of endeavor not ability.

NPC's have always had a lot more to say than the protagonist.

Anyway, we know how much protagonist dialogue there is, it's already been stated by Bethesda that there were approximately 13000 lines for each gender protag VA. You seem determined to believe that there is less dialogue in FO4 than previous games, when obviously the opposite is true.

No, I was just considering things. I'd rather be pessimistic to optimistic so I won't be overwhelmingly disappointed like I was with Skyrim and like many will be with this game because the majority of the population are imagining a perfect game, which just won't happen. So I'm not going to go into it thinking everything's going to be how I want it to be. I'd rather question than not, and there isn't a thing wrong with that.
