Fallout 4 hardcoe mode - Yes or no?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 1:28 pm

Hello guys!

In Fallout: New Vegas you could play in a hardcoe mode, which meant that you had to maintain and satisfy a few basic needs, namely hunger, thirst and sleep. Ammunition had weight and it was more difficult to heal, e.g. stimpaks and RadAways healed over time, and more.

I loved this option for FNV, since it made the game feel a lot more realistic. The wastelands were actually as unforgiving and dangerous as they seemed. I would love to see this in Fallout 4, although I'm wondering how many of you guys would like to see a hardcoe mode implemented into the new game. So, what are your thoughts about this? Yay or nay?

hardcoe mode would certainly be nice. I like having more options, even if I won't use them all.

Never felt like using Extra Tedium mode in FO:NV, wouldn't use it in FO4.

I want one, I played New Vegas always with hardcoe mode , and want it in Fallout 4 too. It makes the game more realistic, I mean the real challenge in such a scenario would be find enough to eat and drink

Bethesda said they were not ready to talk about modes yet.

Hopefully soon.

I wouldn't mind if it's in but I likely wouldn't. Use it unless I was really bored and wanted to challenge myself.

I would like a more fleshed out hardcoe mode since the one in NV was a little half baked, there were some great ideas but executed a bit poorly mainly with the thirst/hunger/sleep bars which I found to be tedious 75% of the time.

If they do thatneed to eatdrink and sleep nonsense thats easily fixable anyways then no thanks. Having to use crutches to fix broken limbs was a good edition though. Hopefully it wpuld do that and some other thingss without the boring tedium.

I liked hardcoe mode in Fallout Vegas for the crippling and healing mechanics. Needing to eat drink and sleep only added tedium (to me) in a game where all these resources were always in abundance.

I still maintain itd be better to make Stimpaks very rare - if your primary means of healing between battles was food and drink, it'd have the same net effect with less tedium. And the sleeping thing just felt silly to me.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. You could sell the game with Stimpaks that heal over time or ammo that has weight and whatever and most people wouldn't really care if the game was balanced around that, but the needs mechanics just didn't work. As for sleep, I think the Well Rested benefit is incentive enough for us to keep a regular schedule; although I bet they could tie it in to AP regeneration, or add some Endurance perks that add more buffs to Well-Rested characters. I'd like that.

Yes to hardcoe. Coupled with Very Hard difficulty, it made survival crafting and ammo reloading a 100% worthwhile endeavor...and certain items incredibly useful. It was well thought out in New Vegas. I fear Bethesda might not see the attraction of it for a mass audience though.

No, I'd rather a more fleshed out and varied wild wasteland mode instead..

New Vegas had the better Wild Wasteland mode IMO. Trying to find a certain Wild Wasteland encounter in Fallout 3 was a pain. Maybe a mix of random encounters and fixed locations would be better.

of course!

hardcoe mode in F:NV was anything but hardcoe though, pointless niggling micro management mode that was. i'd like to see it be done properly this time.

If it's implemented like it was in FO:NV then I have no problem with it. I may even use it for one of my characters this time around.

If they have a hardcoe mode like they did with Fallout: New Vegas, then that pretty much guarantees another playthrough from me. :fallout:

I never really liked/used hardcoe in New Vegas, but I voted yes as even if I don't use it the more options for everyone the better.

I hate anything with a bar on it. Does nothing but limit things.

I did do a playthrough of New Vegas with hardcoe, but it never really grabbed me. The whole survival gameplay thing didn't really start to become interesting for me until I tried Frostfall for Skyrim. Chesko has done a fantastic job there and I am super psyched about the upcoming updates along with Last Seed.

My opinion when it comes to these modes is that we should just let modders do it. It's definitely a niche thing and while it's good for Bethesda to provide as many options as possible I do understand that they are limited and must cater to largest audience. Mods are where niche things thrive.

Really hope so, otherwise I will rely on mods for this.

Really enjoyed Chesko's Frostfall for Skyrim. Arwen also created a fun New Vegas mod that made hardcoe mode quite challenging, for example, by adding bleeding, infection system, craftable bandages, braces, spoilage of food and water, etc. - this was long before DayZ.

The vanilla version of New Vegas hardcoe mode was great but it was a bit too weak - you only needed to sleep about once every week or so, and there was too much food and water around the wasteland, so you almost never went hungry or thirsty.

Completely agree, but I am hoping a hardcoe mode is included in the base game. It's a perfect match for post apocalyptic setting, and considering the wild success of survival games during the past few years, I'd say these features are no longer only interesting for a tiny niche.

Also much easier to develop this type of mod when the mechanics are already in the game, and perhaps more likely that it would be available for console users as well.

Voted yes, but like others have said NV hardcoe mode was pretty mild. If they did put "survival" mode into the game, I hope they look at what the mod community has built and expand it. Otherwise it'd just be a waste of development time, and would only be used until there is a mod with a better system (now that consoles are getting mods).

What I'd want incorporated into the gameplay in the first place:

- Stimpaks heal over time. (according to reports from Quakecon, this is confirmed and they play an animation when you use them)

- Food and drink offer slower, temporary health regen and take the place of Stimpaks as common healing items.

- Heavy Weapon ammo like Mini Nukes and Missiles have weight.

- Ammo and Stimpaks in general need to be less common. (prediction: they will be unless you add more ranks to Scrounger and Fortune Finder on your character)

- Sleeping does not heal crippled limbs.

- Perks that add improve the bonuses from eating, drinking, and sleeping.

What I'd like to see from a "hardcoe"/survival/difficulty mode toggle:

- Sleeping does not heal you at all.

- Enemies attack and defend more aggressively (although they do not suddenly adopt smarter tactics, they should be "smart" regardless of difficulty)

- Penalties for crippled limbs are much more severe.

- Food, drink, and sleep offer reduced buffs compared to the normal mode.

I rather have beth make the base game more deadlier like even at a high level the environment will still kill you if you get to cocky. Doesnt matter how armored you are be carfull. Eating and drinking doesnt sound "appetizing" for me.

Something that's occurred to me is the new radiation mechanic is potentially a pretty big paradigm shift.

Now if I heal through food or water that's irradiated I'm also sacrificing my max HP. That could possibly be a pretty major game-changer.

Don't know/Don't care.

I never really use hardcoe mode in games that have it anyway, there's always a feature I don't like included or it just doesn't work quite right (sleeping, drinking and eating is often rediculously overdone: like having to eat or drink something every few hours, or the character suffers at the worst of times because you haven't taken a nanna-nap for a couple of hours, etc.). Modders tend to do a better job adding the desired hardcoe/survival gameplay features.
