FAlmer helmet, realy weird, or just broken.

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 1:43 pm

The eye-covering, mask-like helmet worn by our poorsighted cave friends is... very weird in many ways. Its appearance is certainly the least weird about it. During gameplay, very confused mod testing, and messing about in CK I concluded the following:

- In game it is marked as heavy armor, it weight is like heavy armor, but it uses the 'armorlight' tag. As a consequence it is funtionaly light armor, making full set bonuses for falmer armor impossible as the rest of the armor does carry the heavy armor keyword.

- Its material is 'ArmorMaterialHide', while the rest of the falmer armor uses 'ArmorMaterialSteel'. This causes the helmet to not benefit from any smithing perk, while the rest of the armor does. The 'matching set' perk also uses these material keywords, therefore the 20% bonus is not added with the full falmer set, but IS added when replacing the helmet with a regular steel one.

- Equipement is set to occupy one or more equipement slots. All helmets use at least 'hair' and 'circlet', the falmer helmet only uses 'hair' making it possible to wear a circlet underneath it.

In short, this looks like monday morning work. A morning where the coffee machine broke down.

There must have been a fair amount of "bad Mondays"

THAT IS AN INCREDIBLE STATISTIC!!

Over 25% screwed up!! Even if most are only very minor screw ups, it is still really, really, really, really bad.

I know they HAVE a QA department, I've seen posts from people working in the QA group : so do they ignore the QA group, it's likely way too small anyway.????????????

I am getting the impression that Bethesda just doesn't care about quality

Bethesda is made up of roughly 100 people, many of whom are artists and designers. The QA "department" is likely made up of only a few individuals. The company as a whole does test the game every once in a while, but as most of the people that work at Bethesda are not qualified software test personnel, this doesn't amount to much. If Bethesda has a dedicated test team, then the problem doesn't lie with QA, but with management. Finding the bugs is only the first step of the battle. If team leads don't think bugs warrant a fix, they won't have people spend time on fixing and testing them. Maybe they should take a week or two off from working on the first DLC and fix all of these clerical errors. This problem gets worse with each new game.

This kind of bugs doesn't bother me much, i can always use some other equipment or simply fix it with CS.
The thing that gets on my nerves is all the broken/bugged quests.
Example: I was doing A Cornered Rat quest on a new character recently, when i got to Esbern he wouldn't open the door, i used the console to advance to the next stage.
He opened the door but wouln't talk, i used the cosole to advance to the next stage again. He talked but wouln't follow me. Long story short, i had to travel back to riverwood, use the console to advance the quest, talk to Delphine, travel to the temple with her, then go back to sewers, talk to him and tell him to wait here, talk to him again and ask him to follow me and finally get him to the temple.
This is part of the main quest, not a simple side quest that you can ignore, Skyrim was released 5 month ago and the main quest is still bugged. I've played pretty much every RPG that have been made since 98-99, i've made tens of mods myself for Neverwinter nights, Morrowind, Dragon age, Oblivion, even diablo 2.
I've always had respect for Bethesda and loved their design and creativity but their games have always been very buggy and Skyrim is no exeption. My brother stoped playing it and said he would give it another try in 5-6 month when unofficiall fix packs are available and my sister traded hers (xbox). It really is a shame, Skyrim is a very beautiful and magical place.

Edit: I could simply use "CompleteQuest MQ202" to simply avoid the glitches and move to the next part but this IS a role playing game, you create a character and want to experience the story with that character. In current state of Skyrim, you have to focus more on bugs and work arounds than role playing. As i said considering how beautiful skyrim is it's such a shame.

Agree.
It upsets me to hear them even mention DLC when there's still so much required to whip the basic game into shape.
I mean, the Amulet of Talos STILL says 0%, for the love of the gods...
Some guy already has a little mod to fix this!
But I guess Beth hasn't got to it yet, heheh...

Forgot - Falmer Helmet
Strange equipment; I have a Full Set (on a mannequin).
I don't think they intend for you to wear it... it's too wierd.
It doesn't even look right on the mannequin!
For example, the boots don't actually cover the feet...
But yes, I've heard you can wear a circlet with this helm.
But no big deal (especially once you are able to double-enchant stuff).

Well, I think Oblivion didn't have a QA department at all (or an extremely limited one), because I remember watching the Making of Oblivion videos, and there Todd said how each and every developer was responsible themselves for the bug-finding and testing and that no one would do it for them.
Not sure about Skyrim or FO3.

That mod is a wonderful piece of work, even if the author (headbomb) does take some liberties with it. It also addresses a hidden attribute that all items possess: keywords. The inconsistency of keywords is why many aspect of the game seem inconsistent or broken when it comes to crafting, interface and inventory behavior.

The author is working with Kivan (the legendary creator of Morrowind and Oblivion unofficial fixpacks), this mod will be included in Kivans fixpack later on.

That is a truly lame attitude on Todd's part. It takes a whole different mind set to track down bugs.

I believe your right about Oblivion, and it looks like the same philosophy carried over to Skyrim

One recent press video from beth (the one where they all went mod-crazy for a week) made it clear that they still have a very similar attitude about bugtracking/fixing; its done by the same people who made the game in the first place. The result is obvious.

The final Oblivion unofficial fix pack addresses over 2200 bugs which Betheda ignored (alot of them clerical or minor issues but atleast a few hundred major issues) and it is only for the core game, the expansion has a seperate fix pack and then there is an unofficial official mod fix pack...

The Falmer helmet is not the only item, magic or perk that look like "monday morning work".

Beth still has no patch that address these issues.
Lets hope that they observe sites like uespwiki.

I think i will take a break from skyrim too. Having to look up work arounds constantly and deal with all the issues the game currently has, takes the whole fun out of the game. I will give it another go in year or so. Hopefully the game will be enjoyable by then.

EDIT: I agree Thoth, for example i've played skyrim for around 150 hours whitout a single crash ,1920x1080 res, everything on high, constant 60 fps with v-sync on, no ini modification and the only mods i currently use are a few fix packs and skyui (only if updated versions are available for current game version) and exploring skyrim is a real joy, the problem is all the bugged/broken items, quests and npcs... am i suppose to just explore caves and dungeons and say "oooh shiny!"?

I also recommend use that mod with Smithing perks Overhaul mod and Complete Crafting Overhaul mod. Same author.

IMPORTANT!!! Load order:

(Other mods concerning items/recipes/perks)
Smithing Perks Overhaul - balanced
Weapons and Armor Fixes
Weapons and Armor Fixes - Hacks
Complete Crafting Overhaul -or- Complete Crafting Overhaul - BS Version (if you use Better Sorting mod)

Got these all on deck for when the patching subsides....until then I run pretty much modfree just the HD fix and ShyNirnrootsLazyZombiesPossessiveNirnroots

While I don't doubt that plenty of those weapon fixes are correcting actual mistakes I think their may be some rhyme or reason as to why they are made the way they are at least for some items. Maybe I am wrong who knows.
